Hollywood prepares for the big night: everything you need to know about the 2026 Oscars
The ceremony for the 98th Academy Awards will take place on 15 March 2026 at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Hosted once again by comedian Conan O’Brien, the gala will bring together the global film industry to celebrate the very best films released in 2025, marking one of the most anticipated events in the international cinematic calendar.
Leading the nominations is “Sinners”, the ambitious film directed by Ryan Coogler, which has received 16 nominations and stands out as the clear favourite of this year’s edition. It is followed by “One Battle After Another” by Paul Thomas Anderson with 13 nominations, alongside other notable productions such as “Sentimental Value”, “Marty Supreme” and “Frankenstein”, confirming a particularly rich and varied film season.

“Sinners”
Directed by Ryan Coogler, this intense story set in 1930s Mississippi follows two brothers attempting to open a nightclub for the African-American community in a climate marked by social tensions and supernatural threats. With 16 nominations, the film has become one of the season’s major phenomena and among the most talked-about productions of the year.
The performance of Michael B. Jordan, who portrays both brothers, has been widely praised by critics and places him among the leading contenders for Best Actor.
“One Battle After Another”
The latest project from Paul Thomas Anderson is shaping up to be one of the night’s strongest competitors. With 13 nominations, this ambitious production blends political drama with historical reflection through a complex and visually compelling narrative. The film also features a standout performance from Leonardo DiCaprio, once again positioning him among the frontrunners in the Best Actor category.
“Hamnet”
Directed by Chloé Zhao, this adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel explores the life of Agnes, the wife of William Shakespeare, and the emotional impact of losing their son Hamnet. A new interpretation of Mary Shelley’s classic arrives from Guillermo del Toro, who once again explores the fragile boundaries between humanity and monstrosity through his unmistakable visual style. The film particularly stands out in technical categories such as production design, cinematography and costume design.
“Marty Supreme”
Directed by Josh Safdie, this film offers an intense and contemporary look at ambition, success and the contradictions of the American dream. Its dynamic style and bold narrative have made it one of the most discussed productions of the season.
“Sentimental Value”
Norwegian director Joachim Trier delivers one of the year’s most elegant dramas with this film exploring memory, family relationships and identity through an intimate and deeply emotional narrative. The film has also been praised for its performances, including that of Renate Reinsve, nominated for Best Actress.
An edition marked by the diversity of contemporary cinema
This year’s nominations reflect a diverse and global cinematic landscape, where major productions sit alongside intimate dramas and auteur-driven films.
The Academy has also introduced, for the first time, a new category for Best Casting, increasing the total number of awards and recognising the crucial role that casting plays in shaping a film.
