Nestled in the picturesque village of Deià, in Mallorca’s majestic Serra de Tramuntana, lies La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel, a luxurious retreat that fuses the island’s artistic and cultural soul with unrivalled hospitality. A legacy of art with a bohemian soul
Since the early 20th century, the charming village of Deià has attracted artists, writers and filmmakers in search of inspiration drawn from its luminous atmosphere, creative solitude and deep connection to nature. At the heart of this cultural enclave stands La Residencia — a hotel that offers more than luxury: it is a living homage to art, history and the refined sensibility of this corner of the Tramuntana mountains.
Much of this legacy is owed to the artistic vision and devotion of an unforgettable couple: George and Cecilie Sheridan.
George Sheridan (1923–2008), a British painter, was a central figure in Deià’s artistic movement. Influenced by Matisse and Braque, his work is characterised by expressive use of colour and a vibrant energy closely tied to the Mallorcan landscape.
Sheridan exhibited internationally — in London, Paris, Stockholm and New York — but it was in Deià that he found his true creative home. For decades, he not only produced a unique and passionate body of work, but also served as a mentor and driving force behind the thriving local art community.
Alongside him, Cecilie Sheridan has played a pivotal role as an artist, writer, curator and art historian. Since the 1980s, she has been the key force behind the cultural identity of La Residencia, nurturing and curating an outstanding contemporary art collection that now includes over 800 works by more than 85 artists, many of them deeply rooted in Deià’s artistic spirit.
After many years passionately dedicated to the soul of the hotel, Cecilie now shares curatorial duties with her daughter, Amy Sheridan, remaining a guiding and essential figure in the project. Her experience, sensitivity and insight are vital to preserving the authentic, vibrant spirit that has transformed La Residencia into a true sanctuary of art on the island.
The collection also includes works by major names such as Joan Miró — with 33 original lithographs housed in the hotel — yet its essence lies in celebrating the creative richness of Deià and preserving its bohemian, authentic and free-spirited nature.

During our stay, we had the great pleasure of meeting Cecilie in person and sharing stories, laughter and heartfelt memories. Her energy is infectious, and her love for art, for George, and for Deià, continues to shine brightly in every word, every painting and every corner of this extraordinary place.
The connection between La Residencia and the arts is not only part of its past, but also a key part of its vibrant present. This year, and for the first time in collaboration with Artnet, the hotel launches “Infinite Horizons”, a new artist residency programme that reaffirms its role as a creative sanctuary in Deià.
Inspired by Mediterranean light, sublime sea views and the ancient energy of the Tramuntana range, three contemporary artists have been invited to explore their artistic practice through tactile materials such as ceramics, painting and sculpture — always in dialogue with Mallorca’s rich artisan tradition.
The first residency will feature Liang Fu (May–June 2025), followed by Lara Ordóñez (July–August), and finally Berta De La Rosa (September–October). A creative journey that expands the horizons of art in one of the Mediterranean’s most inspiring destinations.

Although there are different room categories, each one stands out for its unique character and unmistakable charm. Beyond the rooms, the hotel offers a complete experience for the senses. In addition to its main pool with stunning views, there are several more secluded options — including an adults-only pool and a number of suites with private pools, perfect for basking in the sun in total privacy. All of them are complemented by attentive bar and dining service, designed to enhance every moment of relaxation.
While it covers a large area, the hotel’s layout has been designed with sensitivity and harmony, making it feel both intimate and welcoming. Wandering through its various corners is a true delight: from the Poets’ Walk, a pathway winding through olive trees and sculptures that leads to a viewpoint where sunrise yoga sessions are held and the hotel’s beloved donkeys often graze; to the gardens in front of the main building, where guests can play petanque, sunbathe in peace or enjoy a match on the tennis courts.

Cuisine that delights the senses

El Olivo, the hotel’s flagship restaurant, is located in a beautifully restored 16th-century olive oil mill. Its intimate setting provides the perfect backdrop for a truly unforgettable dinner. Here, fine dining is expressed with reverence for local produce and a harmonious balance of flavours, presented in dishes that are as elegant as they are emotive.
Restaurante Miró, meanwhile, offers a more relaxed yet equally special experience. Surrounded by over 30 original works by Joan Miró, this space invites guests to enjoy tapas, Mediterranean plates and signature cocktails while the sun sets behind the mountains. It’s ideal for a light lunch, an evening aperitif or a casual dinner surrounded by art and nature.
Completing the trio is Tramuntana Grill, located beside the main pool, serving open-air lunches in a bright, breezy setting. Its menu includes freshly caught fish, grilled meats, salads, pasta and homemade desserts — perfect for those who want to enjoy the sun without compromising on flavour or quality.

It’s the perfect spot for a gentle swim, a quiet read, a moment of stillness, or simply floating without hurry. And just before or after a dip, there’s nothing better than unwinding in the Finnish sauna, Turkish bath or jacuzzi, located on the lower level — the ideal way to renew both body and mind.
In addition, La Residencia offers a wide range of activities designed to enrich your stay through art, movement, and connection with the natural surroundings. From painting, sculpture and pottery classes with local artists to private visits to the resident artist’s studio, each experience is an invitation to awaken your creativity.
And for those seeking a deeper connection with nature, the hotel organises hiking routes through the Serra de Tramuntana, horseback rides along the area’s rural paths, and boat trips along the coast to uncover hidden coves and secluded spots only accessible by sea. Guests can also take part in stargazing sessions, botanical workshops, Mallorcan cooking classes, or join in the seasonal olive harvest experience.
But if you’re in the mood for something more active, you’ll find a fully equipped gym, tennis courts with views of the mountains and the village of Deià, as well as spacious garden areas where yoga sessions are regularly held.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, where guests are received as though returning home.
Together with its exceptional location in the heart of Deià, it is this heartfelt human touch that makes La Residencia truly unforgettable. Deià: a village to simply get lost in
Deià is one of the most beautiful and evocative villages on the island. That’s why we wholeheartedly recommend getting lost — quite literally — in its cobbled streets, visiting the hilltop church and the small cemetery with its breathtaking views over the sea.
It’s also well worth pausing in the charming garden of Cas Peixot for a drink in the sun, and strolling down the main street, home to some of the village’s most interesting shops, cafés and creative spaces, such as de moniö, Datura Studio Isla, or the Haan Gallery Studio, among others.
If you’re there on a Wednesday, don’t miss the outdoor local market, where you’ll find stalls selling food, clothing, crafts and live music in a laid-back, community setting.
Finally, one of the must-do walks during your stay is the one that leads to the stunning Cala Deià. There are several ways to get there: on the way down, we took a gentle path that skirts the village and leads into nature; on the way back, we climbed up via the mountains, where we were rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.
The cove itself, framed by rocks, lush greenery and crystal-clear waters, is especially magical outside high season — when peace and beauty reign.
In short, and as you’ll soon discover, a stay at La Residencia is not just about rest — it’s about reconnecting, finding inspiration, and celebrating life in good company.
