The rebirth of Hotel Julien in Antwerp
After more than 20 years as a boutique refuge in Antwerp’s historic heart, Hotel Julien reopens with a renovation that elevates timeless elegance and quiet luxury. Designed by Bea Mombaers and Peter Ivens.
In the heart of Antwerp lies a place that has remained faithful to a vision of intimate, thoughtful and deeply human hospitality. Since opening in 2004, Hotel Julien has become a benchmark of discreet luxury on the European hotel scene. Now, following a thorough renovation led by the creative duo Bea Mombaers and Peter Ivens, the hotel is reborn with more soul than ever.

A modern classic in the historic centre
Housed within two restored 16th-century buildings, Hotel Julien has always felt like a well-kept secret. Its discreet façade conceals a world of calm, design and warmth that unfolds across 21 rooms, a bar, a rooftop terrace with views of the cathedral, and a wellness area designed for urban contemplation. Over two decades, it has become the kind of hotel that both international travellers and sophisticated locals enthusiastically recommend — and return to.

A renovation that respects and elevates
The hotel’s new chapter does not seek to erase its past, but to celebrate it. Owner Mouche Van Hool was determined to preserve the welcoming spirit and almost domestic atmosphere that have always defined Hotel Julien.
To achieve this, she entrusted two long-time collaborators: Bea Mombaers, a designer with an innate sensitivity for capturing the essence of understated luxury, and Peter Ivens, an interior architect renowned for reading and reinterpreting the atmosphere of each space.
The result is a hotel that feels renewed but not transformed. The interventions are subtle, guided by deep respect for the original structure and the desire to enhance what already worked. Layouts remain largely unchanged, but textures, materials and carefully designed lighting (developed in collaboration with PS Lab) create spaces that invite both retreat and contemplation.

Design as an emotional narrator
Today, Hotel Julien serves as a stage for silent emotions. Every corner tells a story of serene elegance: bespoke furniture for the reception, lounge, bar and breakfast areas; noble materials that evoke the passage of time; and a colour palette rooted in calm.
The pieces chosen are not dictated by fleeting trends, but by a constant pursuit of timelessness. It is design that seeks not to impress, but to accompany; not to impose, but to suggest. As the authors describe it: “Refined, but never pretentious. Timeless, yet always contemporary”.
A sensory experience beyond aesthetics
One of the greatest achievements of this renovation is the way it has preserved the hotel’s emotional atmosphere. Everything has been designed to make guests feel at home — a home that inspires, welcomes and relaxes. The selection of materials — natural stone, aged wood, weighty fabrics — conveys a sense of grounding and authenticity.
The à la carte breakfast, now served in a renewed space with bespoke furniture, becomes a ritual celebrating detail. Meanwhile, the bar, with its reconfigured layout, reasserts itself as a meeting point for both guests and locals — a place to share a glass of wine or a carefully crafted cocktail.

Wellness, rooftop and hidden treasures
Though intimate in scale, Hotel Julien offers services typical of a grand hotel. Its wellness area, conceived as an urban retreat, allows guests to book treatments such as personalised massages. The rooftop remains one of the hotel’s most coveted spaces, with privileged views of Antwerp Cathedral inviting silence and contemplation.
The hotel also features a meeting room for private events and can even be fully privatised for tailor-made celebrations.

A philosophy beyond design
What makes Hotel Julien truly special is not just its refined aesthetic or privileged location. It is its philosophy of hospitality. For Mouche Van Hool, the hotel is almost an extension of her own home. Her vision was always to create a place where luxury meant closeness, quietness and honest beauty.
“I wanted to create a hotel that felt like visiting good friends. An intimate, welcoming place with soul”, she explains. That vision remains intact two decades later, now reinforced by a renovation that has updated the hotel without sacrificing its essence.

A new chapter without losing identity
Hotel Julien has entered a new chapter in its history. A chapter that does not break with the past, but honours and enhances it — proving that true modernity lies in coherence, sensitivity and attention to detail.
