NYCxDESIGN Festival 2026: when design connects cities, people and the future

CC/magazine is proud to be an official Media Partner of New York’s most important design festival, which returns in May 2026 with a new edition focused on sustainability, accessibility and social impact.

From 14 to 20 May 2026, New York City will once again become the world capital of design, as the NYCxDESIGN Festival unveils its annual programme filled with public installations, exhibitions, talks, tours and collaborations that transcend disciplines, generations and borders.

This year, under the theme Design Connects Us, the festival goes beyond showcasing beautifully designed objects or spaces. It aspires to create meaningful connections — between people, ideas and communities; between technology, art and sustainability; between the present and a shared future. The organising team’s vision is clear: to put design at the service of life, not the other way around.

A moment of change and purpose

We are living in a time when cities, their dynamics and their challenges demand a new creative language. The climate crisis, growing inequalities, the impact of technology and the urgency of community are reshaping what we understand by relevant design.

In this context, NYCxDESIGN Festival 2026 arrives with a renewed energy: more collaborative, more inclusive, more global. “Design that connects us”, as the organisers put it, becomes not just a celebration, but a call to commitment.

After years of consolidating its role as New York’s definitive design platform —a living map that covers all five boroughs, spanning institutions, emerging voices, global icons and local talent— this edition aims to mark a turning point. While the core structure remains —exhibitions, talks, tours, fairs— the focus shifts firmly towards experience, community and impact.

Design with purpose

Sustainability, equity, emerging technologies like AI, regenerative materials — these are just some of the core themes in the conversations this festival seeks to amplify. As the organisers state, “this edition is about design with purpose — design that inspires, includes and connects.”

Beyond aesthetics, the festival offers accessible public installations, inclusive talks, and open spaces designed to break down the traditional barrier between “industry” and “public”. This democratisation of design marks one of the most important shifts in the 2026 edition — a change that will undoubtedly resonate with global audiences.

Interview with Ilene Shaw, Executive Director of NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s official design festival

CC/magazine had the opportunity to speak with the NYCxDESIGN Festival team, who shared their vision, purpose and the philosophy behind a new edition that promises to transform the relationship between design and society.

NYCxDESIGN has become a cultural landmark in the city’s creative calendar. What makes this year’s edition particularly special or different?

This year’s NYCxDESIGN Festival feels especially meaningful because it reflects how deeply design connects us — to our city, to one another, and to the world around us.

We emerge at a time of challenge with a strong sense of purpose and optimism. What makes this edition stand out is the spirit of collaboration across all the boroughs — from emerging talents to global icons — all celebrating how design shapes our shared future. And we have received very meaningful outreach from our international partners.

“We emerge at a time of challenge with a strong sense of purpose and optimism.”

We’re also placing greater emphasis on accessibility and inclusion, ensuring that everyone can experience and understand the power and joy of design, through the industry and public alike.  Through exhibitions, talks, tours, and installations, we respond to our times — with creativity, resilience, and heart.

In what ways does the 2026 vision for NYCxDESIGN reflect current conversations in design, sustainability, and community engagement?

For 2026, our vision for NYCxDESIGN is deeply rooted in connection — between disciplines, communities, and ideas. Design today goes beyond objects and spaces; it’s about how we live, how we care for one another, and how we shape a more sustainable, healthy and inclusive world.

The conversations happening across the design community — around environmental responsibility, social impact, and the power of creativity to unite — are exactly what this next Festival will reflect.   We’ll explore the AI, science, and art through a design lens.

“Our theme is a call to action to bring people together to exchange knowledge, to listen, to imagine, and to create meaningful change.”

Our theme, Design Connects Us, is more than a statement. It’s a call to action — to bring people together to exchange knowledge, to listen, to imagine, and to create meaningful change. Through public installations, exhibitions, and dialogue, we’re celebrating the designers who are rethinking materials, reimagining systems, and rebuilding trust in the role of design as a force for good.

In every way, 2026 is about design with purpose — design that inspires, includes, and connects.

How do you see the role of NYCxDESIGN evolving in the coming years, especially with New York’s creative industries in constant transformation?

I see NYCxDESIGN continuing to grow as both a mirror and a catalyst for New York’s ever-evolving creative spirit. This city never stands still — and neither should we. As design, technology, and culture continue to intertwine, our role is to stay open, curious, and connected to the pulse of what’s next.

In the coming years, NYCxDESIGN will expand its reach — strengthening partnerships across industries and countries, supporting the next generation of talent, and amplifying the voices of those who are reshaping our built environment and our shared future.

Ultimately, we’ll continue to be a platform that celebrates creativity while also asking important questions plaguing our times  — about sustainability, health, technology and the role design plays in improving everyday life. Our goal is to ensure that New York remains not just a capital of design, but a city that leads with vision, and humanity.

What’s your personal highlight — the one moment, installation, or collaboration you’re most excited about this new edition?

That’s a hard one — there are so many moments I’m excited about! But if I had to choose, it’s the sense of togetherness that the 2026 Festival will bring. The collaborations forming across disciplines — architects, artists, makers, engineers, students, and brands — all coming together with a shared purpose, feel especially powerful this year.  We are all yearning to connect and support one another.

I’m particularly looking forward to the new public installations and conversations that invite everyone — New Yorkers and visitors alike — to experience design in unexpected ways. There’s a joy and an energy that comes from seeing people connect through innovation, and that’s what I’m most excited to witness.

Experiences that connect

One of our key editorial focuses will be to follow the most significant installations, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and encounters where innovation becomes a bridge across generations. Highlights include the International Spotlight section, the Design Pavilion, and new artist residencies and mentorship programmes.

In the meantime… save the date!
