Kahn<\/em>, Visiting Professor at <em>Yale<\/em> and alongside Professor <em>Can Vu Bui<\/em>. These centres provide psychological, social and practical support for people living with cancer in architectural environments conceived to foster calm, dignity and community.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1808\">The projects featured in the exhibition reinterpret this philosophy within Barcelona\u2019s urban and cultural context. Each proposal explores how design can create welcoming atmospheres through natural light, materiality, landscape relationships and domestic-scale spaces.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1810\" data-end=\"1976\">The result is a collection of architectural visions that understand buildings not merely as containers of activity, but as active participants in the process of care.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"2047\"><span role=\"text\">Maggie\u2019s Centres: a revolution in healthcare architecture<\/span><\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"2049\" data-end=\"2293\">The origins of this philosophy trace back to <em>Maggie Keswick<\/em>, who, after being diagnosed with cancer in 1993, identified a crucial absence in hospitals: spaces where patients could share fears, receive psychological support and feel accompanied.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2295\" data-end=\"2482\">In her book <em data-start=\"2307\" data-end=\"2335\">&#8220;A View from the Front Line&#8221;<\/em>, she described her experience of illness and advocated for the creation of warm, humane and non-medicalised environments within hospital settings.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2484\" data-end=\"2663\">Following her death, her husband, architect and theorist <em>Charles Jencks<\/em>, transformed this vision into an architectural model now known as the <em>Maggie\u2019s Centres Architectural Brief<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2484\" data-end=\"2663\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-98683 size-full\" data-end=\"2953\">This framework establishes key design principles: a domestic, person-centred scale; a social heart organised around an open kitchen; a sequence of spaces offering varying degrees of privacy; integration of architecture with nature and landscape; and buildings that convey beauty and hope.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2955\" data-end=\"3154\">Since the late 1990s, more than 25 <em>Maggie\u2019s Centres<\/em> have been built worldwide, designed by internationally renowned architects such as <em>Zaha Hadid<\/em>, <em>Norman Foster<\/em>, <em>Rem Koolhaas<\/em> and <em>Benedetta Tagliabue<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3156\" data-end=\"3262\">Each building is unique, yet all share a common goal: to humanise the experience of cancer through design.<\/p>\n<h6 data-section-id=\"fjdthr\" data-start=\"3269\" data-end=\"3324\"><span role=\"text\">K\u00e1lida Sant Pau: adapting the model to Barcelona<\/span><\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"3326\" data-end=\"3458\">The exhibition also highlights the <em>K\u00e1lida Sant Pau Centre<\/em>, inaugurated in 2019 and designed by <em>Miralles Tagliabue \u2013 EMBT Architects<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3460\" data-end=\"3645\">Located next to the historic <em>Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site<\/em> by <em>Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner<\/em>, the building establishes a dialogue with the architectural legacy of the modernist hospital complex.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3647\" data-end=\"3818\">Its design combines ceramic lattices, timber and local materials, creating a warm, domestic atmosphere that contrasts data-end=\"4211\">This was the first <em>Maggie\u2019s Centre<\/em> adapted to the Spanish context, promoted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundaciokalida.org\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Fundaci\u00f3n K\u00e1lida<\/em><\/a>, founded in Barcelona in 2016 to provide free psychosocial support to people with cancer.<\/p>\n<h6 data-section-id=\"1t53shn\" data-start=\"4218\" data-end=\"4260\"><span role=\"text\">Designing for care: the Yale studio<\/span><\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"4262\" data-end=\"4455\">Within this framework, the <em>Yale Advanced Studio<\/em> posed a specific challenge: to imagine a new <em>K\u00e1lida Centre<\/em> within the <em>Vall d\u2019Hebron<\/em> hospital campus, the largest healthcare complex in Catalonia.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4457\" data-end=\"4584\">Rather than following conventional hospital design approaches, the studio explored a more sensory and experimental methodology.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4457\" drawings and mixed media techniques. This approach allowed them to investigate architecture through a tactile and emotional lens, aligned with the philosophy of the <em>Maggie\u2019s Centres<\/em>. The aim was not simply to design a building, but to translate the values of care into spatial experiences.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4586\" data-end=\"4862\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-98685 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Healing-Architectures30.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1396\" height=\"2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Healing-Architectures30.jpg 1396w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Healing-Architectures30-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Healing-Architectures30-297x425.jpg 297w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Healing-Architectures30-768x1100.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Healing-Architectures30-1072x1536.jpg 1072w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1396px) 100vw, 1396px\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 data-section-id=\"14btjam\" data-start=\"4977\" data-end=\"5018\"><span role=\"text\">Architecture inspired by Barcelona<\/span><\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"5020\" data-end=\"5170\">A key element of the studio was the <em>Travel Week<\/em> in Barcelona, during which students immersed themselves in the city\u2019s architectural and urban context.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5172\" data-end=\"5476\">They visited landmark works of 20th and 21st-century Catalan architecture, including the <em>Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site<\/em>, <em>Casa Ugald<\/em>e by <em>Jos\u00e9 Antonio Coderch<\/em>, <em>Casa Ricarda<\/em> by <em>Antonio Bonet<\/em>, the<em> Barcelona Pavilion<\/em> by <em>Mies van der Rohe<\/em>, <em>Fundaci\u00f3 Joan Mir\u00f3<\/em> by <em>Josep Llu\u00eds Sert<\/em>, and <em>Sala Beckett<\/em> by <em>Flores &amp; Prats<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5478\" data-end=\"5662\">The week concluded with a workshop at the <em>Enric Miralles Foundation<\/em>, where students created a large collective collage combining drawings, textures and fragments of their observations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5664\" data-end=\"5959\">This experience enabled the projects to incorporate key elements of Barcelona\u2019s architectural culture: the relationship with landscape and topography, the importance of public space as a place of encounter, and the expressive use of materials characteristic of contemporary Catalan architecture.<\/p>\n<h6 data-section-id=\"1613k5h\" data-start=\"5966\" data-end=\"6013\"><span role=\"text\">New visions for the architecture of care<\/span><\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"6015\" data-end=\"6089\">The resulting projects offer diverse interpretations of the <em>K\u00e1lida Centre<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6091\" data-end=\"6365\">Some proposals organise buildings around internal courtyards, creating calm refuges within the hospital campus.
