In a decade marked by the space race, technological advancement, and the American Dream, <em>Saarinen<\/em> conceived a structure ready to take off. Its curved roof, fluid forms and complete lack of right angles defied conventional architecture. Like many modernist works, it was a built utopia.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1501\">For years, the terminal was the heart of one of the most iconic US airlines. <em>TWA (Trans World Airlines)<\/em> stood for glamour, efficiency and global connection. But time, corporate mergers and a changing aviation industry led to its closure in 2001.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1501\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-96912 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/LUDWIG-FAVRE-NEW-YORK-1-93.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1125\" height=\"1500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/LUDWIG-FAVRE-NEW-YORK-1-93.jpg 1125w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/LUDWIG-FAVRE-NEW-YORK-1-93-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/LUDWIG-FAVRE-NEW-YORK-1-93-319x425.jpg 319w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/LUDWIG-FAVRE-NEW-YORK-1-93-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1125px) 100vw, 1125px\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 data-start=\"1503\" data-end=\"1553\">Restoring without betraying: Saarinen\u2019s legacy<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"1555\" data-end=\"1732\">Declared a historic landmark in 1994 and listed on the <em>National Register of Historic Places<\/em> in 2005, the building simply had to be preserved \u2014 it was an architectural necessity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1734\" data-end=\"2134\"><em>MCR and MORSE Development<\/em> led the monumental project, involving 22 government agencies, over 170 firms, and hundreds of workers. <em>Beyer Blinder Belle<\/em> oversaw the restoration of the original building, while <em>LUBRANO CIAVARRA Architects<\/em> designed two new hotel wings that embrace the terminal without overshadowing it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1734\" data-end=\"2134\">The result: 512 rooms woven into a sophisticated, seamless, and functional experience.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1734\" data-end=\"2134\">\u201cThe TWA Terminal at JFK, designed by Eero Saarinen, was for years one of the great temples of modern design.\u201d<\/h2>\n<h6 data-start=\"2250\" data-end=\"2291\">Uncompromising mid-century aesthetics<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"2293\" data-end=\"2725\">Walking through the <em>TWA Hotel<\/em> is like stepping onto a film set \u2014 not one that imitates, but one that revives. Everything feels natural, flowing, functional. The hotel is not only a visual reference but also a living museum. Original <em>TWA<\/em> uniforms \u2014 designed by Balmain, <em>Valentino<\/em>, and <em>Stan Herman<\/em> \u2014 are displayed like works of art. Everything works aesthetically and sensorially. Storage is limited, minibars are empty, and there\u2019s no coffee maker or kettle in the room. Minor details, but ones that may affect functionality for some guests.<\/p>\n<h6 data-start=\"3712\" data-end=\"3757\">The world\u2019s largest hotel gym (literally)<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"3759\" data-end=\"3916\">The <em>TWA Hotel<\/em> does nothing by halves. Its gym is the largest hotel gym in the world.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3759\" data-end=\"3916\">Managed by <em>The Wright Fit<\/em>, it has over 10,000 square feet devoted to wellness. With <em>Peloton<\/em> bikes, yoga areas, free weights, battle ropes and cutting-edge machines, it redefines what &#8220;keeping fit&#8221; means while in transit.<\/p>\n<h6 data-start=\"4061\" data-end=\"4093\">A pool with a view of dreams<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"4095\" data-end=\"4344\">The hotel\u2019s hidden gem is its rooftop infinity pool. With direct views of runway <em>4L\/22R<\/em>, it offers a surreal experience: swimming as aircraft take off just metres away. In winter, it transforms into a heated &#8220;pool-cuzzi&#8221; and remains open year-round.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4346\" data-end=\"4476\">The pool isn\u2019t just a place to relax \u2014 it\u2019s a space for reflection. Seating 200 guests with an open kitchen, it revives the legacy of the original <em>Paris Caf\u00e9<\/em> that once occupied the same spot. The menu, created with <em data-start=\"4729\" data-end=\"4748\">Tastes on the Fly<\/em>, offers elegant dishes in a timelessly stylish setting.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4806\" data-end=\"5074\">Other options include the <em data-start=\"4832\" data-end=\"4843\">Food Hall<\/em> (featuring fast favourites like <em data-start=\"4876\" data-end=\"4895\">Empanada Republic<\/em> and <em data-start=\"4900\" data-end=\"4916\">The Halal Guys<\/em>), the <em data-start=\"4923\" data-end=\"4949\">Intelligentsia Coffeebar<\/em>, and of course, <em data-start=\"4966\" data-end=\"4985\">The Sunken Lounge<\/em> \u2014 a conversation pit with red carpeting and curved sofas serving 60s-inspired cocktails.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5076\" data-end=\"5311\">The <em data-start=\"5080\" data-end=\"5104\">Connie Cocktail Lounge<\/em>, located inside a restored <em>Lockheed Constellation<\/em> aircraft, is the ultimate nostalgic experience.
