{"id":96766,"date":"2026-01-28T16:16:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T16:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/?p=96766"},"modified":"2026-02-23T10:44:37","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T10:44:37","slug":"aalula-arts-festival-2026-desert-x-contemporary-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/en\/aalula-arts-festival-2026-desert-x-contemporary-art\/","title":{"rendered":"AlUla Arts Festival 2026: the desert as a living museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"344\" data-end=\"836\">A monumental programme that fuses art, nature and culture, this year\u2019s highlights include the much-anticipated return of <strong data-start=\"700\" data-end=\"718\">Desert X AlUla<\/strong> \u2014 a striking outdoor exhibition that reimagines the desert as canvas, muse, and platform for cross-cultural dialogue.<\/p>\n<h6 data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"891\">Desert X AlUla 2026: a journey beyond measure<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"893\" data-end=\"1290\">The 2026 edition of <em>Desert X AlUla<\/em> unfolds under the evocative theme <em>\u201cSpace Without Measure\u201d<\/em>, inspired by the writings of poet <em>Khalil Gibran<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"893\" data-end=\"1290\">The exhibition brings together 11 Saudi and international artists, whose large-scale, site-specific works are embedded in canyons, dunes and oases, offering an immersive experience of contemplation, memory, and cutting-edge expression.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1328\">Among the participating artists are:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1328\">&#8211; <em>Agnes Denes<\/em>, a pioneer of land art.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1328\">&#8211; <em>H\u00e9ctor Zamora<\/em>, whose sound sculpture transforms the valley into a collective instrument.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1328\">&#8211; <em>Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons<\/em>, who reinterprets desert sunsets through a spiritual and botanical lens.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1328\">&#8211; <em>Sara Abdu<\/em>, who revives ancient building techniques using rammed earth structures.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1669\" data-end=\"1944\">\u201cThey have crafted a curatorial journey that connects past and future, and nature with poetic and critical thought.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1669\" data-end=\"1944\">The curatorial team is led by <em>Wejdan Reday<\/em> and <em>Zo\u00e9 Whitley<\/em>, with <em>Neville Wakefield<\/em> and <em>Raneem Farsi <\/em>serving as artistic directors.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1669\" data-end=\"1944\">Together, they have crafted a curatorial journey that connects past and future, and nature with poetic and critical thought.<\/p>\n<h6 data-start=\"2047\" data-end=\"2089\">A festival infused with creativity<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"2091\" data-end=\"2531\">The <em>AlUla Arts Festival<\/em> extends far beyond <em>Desert X<\/em>. For the first time, the festival presents <em>Arduna<\/em>, a major exhibition within the pre-opening programme of <em>AlUla\u2019s future Contemporary Art Museum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2091\" data-end=\"2531\">In collaboration with the <em>Centre Pompidou<\/em> and <em>AFALULA<\/em>, Arduna features over 80 works exploring the relationship between humanity and the Earth, including pieces by <em>Picasso<\/em>, <em>Kandinsky<\/em>, and artists from around the globe.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2533\" data-end=\"2895\">At the same time, <em>AlJadidah Arts District<\/em> becomes a vibrant hub of public installations, film screenings, concerts, performances, and exhibitions, including new work by Saudi artist <em>Sara Abdu<\/em> at <em>ATHR Gallery<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2533\" data-end=\"2895\">Meanwhile, <em>Design Space AlUla<\/em> showcases emerging and established designers reinterpreting traditional crafts through a contemporary lens.<\/p>\n<h6 data-start=\"2897\" data-end=\"2939\">Art, community and cultural legacy<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"2941\" data-end=\"3324\">More than a destination event, the <em>AlUla Arts Festival<\/em> aims to generate social, educational, and economic impact.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2941\" data-end=\"3324\">Initiatives such as <em>Madrasat Addeera<\/em>, the local art and design school, along with residency programmes, training sessions, and collaborations with Saudi artists and artisans, solidify <em>AlUla<\/em>\u2019s position as a model for sustainable cultural development.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3326\" data-end=\"3569\">The festival also includes art-themed hiking routes, creative workshops, astronomical observations, and sensory experiences at sites like <em>Daimumah Farm<\/em>, which fosters deep connections between art, nature, and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<h6 data-start=\"3571\" data-end=\"3614\">Wadi AlFann: the future of land art<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"3616\" data-end=\"3947\"><em>Desert X AlUla 2026<\/em> also acts as a preview of an even more ambitious project: <em>Wadi AlFann (The Valley of the Arts)<\/em>, a permanent open-air museum set to open in 2028 with major works by <em>James Turrell<\/em>, <em>Agnes Denes<\/em>, <em>Ahmed<\/em> <em>Mater<\/em>, and others.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3616\" data-end=\"3947\">This project will redefine the possibilities of 21st-century land art, transforming the desert into a living, evolving cultural landscape where monumental interventions engage in a profound dialogue with geology, time, and collective imagination, positioning <em>AlUla<\/em> as one of the world\u2019s most visionary epicentres of contemporary art and cultural innovation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3616\" data-end=\"3947\">More than a destination, <em>Wadi AlFann<\/em> is conceived as a long-term cultural ecosystem, where art, sustainability, and ancestral territory converge to shape a new global narrative for the desert in the decades to come.<\/p>\n<h6 data-start=\"4063\" data-end=\"4102\">AlUla: past, present and future<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"4104\" data-end=\"4446\">With a legacy spanning over 7,000 years, <em>AlUla<\/em> is a living museum in its own right. Its archaeological landmarks\u2014including <em>Hegra (UNESCO World Heritage Site)<\/em>, <em>Dadan<\/em> and <em>Jabal Ikmah<\/em>\u2014now enter into dialogue with contemporary artistic expressions, creating a cultural fabric that connects generations and geographies.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3616\" data-end=\"3947\">\u201cThe vision is not only to attract visitors, but to create lasting social, educational and economic impact.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4448\" data-end=\"4738\">The <em>AlUla Arts Festival 2026<\/em> is not just an event for art lovers.
