From the storyboards of “Bottle Rocket”<\/em> to costumes from “The Grand Budapest Hotel”<\/em>, and including the actual miniature sets from “Fantastic Mr. Fox”<\/em> and “Isle of Dogs”<\/em>, the exhibition offers an intimate journey through the creative mind of a true world-builder.<\/p>\n

A unique exhibition: more than a cinematic retrospective<\/h6>\n

“Wes Anderson: The Archives”<\/em> is not just an exhibition\u2014it\u2019s a multisensory experience. The layout follows a chronological path, starting with the director\u2019s early years in the 1990s and culminating in his latest film, “The Phoenician Scheme” <\/em>(2025), with exclusive objects such as a Dunhill<\/em> pipe and a jewelled dagger created by artist Harumi Klossowska de Rola<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Alongside these items, the exhibition features in-gallery screenings of several iconic short films, including Bottle Rocket<\/em>(1993), “Hotel Chevalier”<\/em> (2007), “Castello Cavalcanti” <\/em>(2013), and “The Swan”<\/em> (2023). This marks the first time they have all been shown together in the UK.<\/p>\n

Objects that tell stories<\/h6>\n

The monumental “Grand Budapest Hotel”<\/em> model, over 3 metres wide, the vending machines from “Asteroid City”<\/em> (2023) or the iconic FENDI<\/em> mink coat worn by Gwyneth Paltrow in “The Royal Tenenbaums”<\/em> (2001).<\/p>\n

And also the painting “Boy with Apple”<\/em>, a central piece in “The Grand Budapest Hotel”<\/em>, alongside costumes from Gustave H<\/em> (Ralph Fiennes)<\/em> and Madame D (Tilda Swinton)<\/em>, and the puppets and miniature sets from “Fantastic Mr. Fox”<\/em> and “Isle of Dogs”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And, of course, the iconic faces of his filmography: Bill Murray<\/em>, Tilda Swinton<\/em>, Jason Schwartzman<\/em>, Owen Wilson<\/em>, among many others\u2014actors who not only play roles but seem to inhabit the Anderson universe. Their voices, gestures, and presence have become essential to his emotional aesthetic.<\/p>\n

The exhibition celebrates these collaborations with original costumes, personal items, costume sketches, and behind-the-scenes materials. Perhaps the most touching aspect of this exhibition is its origin. After discovering that everything built for “Bottle Rocket” <\/em>\u2014his first feature\u2014had been sold or lost by the studio, Anderson<\/em> began meticulously archiving all objects from “Rushmore” <\/em>(1998) onwards. That loss marked a turning point, and from then on, he became the guardian of his own cinematic universe, preserving each piece as a fragment of visual memory.<\/p>\n
