Before delving into the film itself, we\u2019d like you to ask yourself: have you ever left someone \u201cgood\u201d \u2014 supposedly perfect \u2014 someone you loved deeply, but no longer wanted to be with? Someone with whom life was easy, and arguments rare. A person you may have built a life with, but still, despite everything pointing to stability, you felt the pull to break away \u2014 because that balance felt more like boredom than joy.<\/p>\n
If the answer is yes, you\u2019ll likely empathise with the protagonist.<\/p>\n
Though the film and its script aren\u2019t exactly designed to make you take sides. And as you\u2019ll see when watching and discussing it in a cineforum with friends, the story often gets dragged into the personal realm and binary judgements \u2014 where one is demonised and the other idealised. We don’t share that approach. We encourage you to watch it with an open mind, setting aside any unconscious biases or preconceived notions.<\/p>\n
Julie<\/em> (played by the captivating Renate Reinsve<\/em>) is about to turn thirty, and her life is a mess. She doesn\u2019t know what she wants to do \u2014 until she meets Aksel<\/em> (Anders Danielsen Lie<\/em>), an attractive comic book artist and writer. They fall in love and embark on a new chapter together.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a 15-year age gap, and although they\u2019re in very different stages of life, love binds them, and they choose to intertwine their futures.<\/p>\n Everything seems to be going well, until one day Julie<\/em> \u2014 bored and craving new emotions \u2014 decides to sneak into a wedding\u2026 And that\u2019s as far as we\u2019ll go, to avoid spoilers.<\/p>\n To outsiders, Julie<\/em> and Aksel<\/em> seem like the perfect couple \u2014 and even they believe it at first. But reality offers a less promising picture. At least, for one of them.<\/p>\n While one feels content with what life and love are offering, the other yearns for more \u2014 even without knowing exactly what that \u201cmore\u201d is.<\/p>\n This gap in expectations and desires can weigh heavily on a relationship, no matter how deep the affection runs.<\/p>\n Love may be the glue, but it\u2019s not always the cure when fundamental differences emerge \u2014 whether in career ambitions, family planning, or the way one sees the world.<\/p>\n Though the film centres around Julie<\/em>\u2019s life, many viewers will see reflections of their own experiences \u2014 especially around the theme of self-discovery.<\/p>\n Often, we enter relationships without truly knowing what we want. Sometimes, things work out. But often, they don\u2019t. Especially when we realise that what we don\u2019t<\/em> want is precisely what we have.<\/p>\n In “The Worst Person in the World”<\/em>, Joachim Trier<\/em> raises essential life questions \u2014 encouraging us to reflect on the many forms and phases of love. Love for ourselves, for partners, for friends, for fleeting connections\u2026<\/p>\n He also explores commitment, what each person brings out in us (we don\u2019t behave or love the same with everyone), and our internalised beliefs about what is \u201cright\u201d or \u201cwrong\u201d \u2014 or, more accurately, what is socially acceptable<\/em> or not.<\/p>\n Among the many messages the film delivers, one stands out: LOVE, despite everything. Because no matter how much we crave control, no one can guarantee that things will turn out as we hoped.<\/p>\n Life is about loving \u2014 and loving well. About giving and receiving affection, even in moments of uncertainty. And of course, without intending to hurt anyone \u2014 though the end of a relationship, no matter who initiates it, almost always brings pain. It\u2019s still a loss.<\/p>\n Ultimately, “The Worst Person in the World”<\/em> reminds us that love stories don\u2019t always end the way we want. But that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re not worth having. Each one teaches us something \u2014 often about ourselves.<\/p>\n The Best: <\/strong>So many. But especially Renate Reinsve<\/em>\u2019s performance as Julie<\/em>, and the wedding scene between her and Eivind<\/em> (Herbert Nordrum<\/em>). No sex, but it\u2019s incredibly sensual and thrilling.<\/p>\n The Worst: <\/strong>Aksel<\/em>\u2019s storyline.
