Its history as a key port in Northern Europe has shaped its architecture, its multicultural character, and, above all, its inexhaustible artistic energy. Beyond the clichés of Flemish design or its reputation as a fashion capital, Antwerp reveals itself as a city of carefully orchestrated contrasts: between the historical solemnity of its cobbled streets and the avant-garde spirit of its galleries, between the weight of its commercial past and the lightness of a cultural scene that never stands still.

We visited in September, coinciding with Us By Night — the design and creativity festival of which we are media partners — and truth be told, we weren’t just surprised; we were utterly fascinated.

The hand that gave Antwerp its name

The legend of the severed hand is an inseparable part of Antwerp’s soul. According to the tale, a brave Roman soldier named Silvius Brabo defeated the giant Antigoon, who used to demand tolls from passing sailors and would cut off the hand of anyone who refused to pay. Brabo avenged them by cutting off the giant’s own hand and throwing it into the River Scheldt. From this act came the name of the city — hand werpen, meaning “to throw the hand” — and its most recognisable symbol.
