Housed within two restored 16th-century buildings, Hotel Julien<\/em> has always felt like a well-kept secret. Its discreet fa\u00e7ade conceals a world of calm, design and warmth that unfolds across 21 rooms, a bar, a rooftop terrace with views of the cathedral, and a wellness area designed for urban contemplation. Over two decades, it has become the kind of hotel that both international travellers and sophisticated locals enthusiastically recommend \u2014 and return to.<\/p>\n

A renovation that respects and elevates<\/h6>\n

The hotel\u2019s new chapter does not seek to erase its past, but to celebrate it. Owner Mouche Van Hool<\/em> was determined to preserve the welcoming spirit and almost domestic atmosphere that have always defined Hotel Julien<\/em>.<\/p>\n

To achieve this, she entrusted two long-time collaborators: Bea Mombaers<\/em>, a designer with an innate sensitivity for capturing the essence of understated luxury, and Peter Ivens<\/em>, an interior architect renowned for reading and reinterpreting the atmosphere of each space.<\/p>\n

The result is a hotel that feels renewed but not transformed. The interventions are subtle, guided by deep respect for the original structure and the desire to enhance what already worked. Layouts remain largely unchanged, but textures, materials and carefully designed lighting (developed in collaboration with PS Lab<\/em>) create spaces that invite both retreat and contemplation.<\/p>\n

Design as an emotional narrator<\/h6>\n

Today, Hotel Julien<\/em> serves as a stage for silent emotions. Every corner tells a story of serene elegance: bespoke furniture for the reception, lounge, bar and breakfast areas; noble materials that evoke the passage of time; and a colour palette rooted in calm.<\/p>\n

The pieces chosen are not dictated by fleeting trends, but by a constant pursuit of timelessness. It is design that seeks not to impress, but to accompany; not to impose, but to suggest. As the authors describe it: “Refined, but never pretentious. Timeless, yet always contemporary”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A sensory experience beyond aesthetics<\/h6>\n

One of the greatest achievements of this renovation is the way it has preserved the hotel\u2019s emotional atmosphere. Everything has been designed to make guests feel at home \u2014 a home that inspires, welcomes and relaxes. The selection of materials \u2014 natural stone, aged wood, weighty fabrics \u2014 conveys a sense of grounding and authenticity.<\/p>\n

The \u00e0 la carte breakfast, now served in a renewed space with bespoke furniture, becomes a ritual celebrating detail. Though intimate in scale, Hotel Julien<\/em> offers services typical of a grand hotel. The rooftop remains one of the hotel\u2019s most coveted spaces, with privileged views of Antwerp Cathedral inviting silence and contemplation.<\/p>\n
