Glorifying haste, quick judgement and indifference has become the norm. In contrast, compassion is not a weakness \u2014 it\u2019s a radical stance. A form of resistance that consists of truly seeing others and refusing to look away.<\/p>\n

A burning world, a saving emotion<\/h6>\n

Social media boils. Debates roar. Headlines are written with a blade. Tension has become the background noise of our time. Hatred comes quickly. Judgement even faster. And empathy, if it comes at all, arrives late.<\/p>\n

From Gaza to Ukraine, from the streets of Los Angeles or Paris, suffering has become part of the landscape. Not just because it\u2019s everywhere, but because we\u2019ve grown used to it. That dangerous habit of witnessing another\u2019s pain and feeling nothing.<\/p>\n

That indifference \u2014 more than the horror itself \u2014 is the real symptom of a moral crisis. And this is precisely where compassion erupts. Not as a soft gesture, but as a disruptive force. A language of resistance.<\/p>\n

Compassion: a way of being<\/h6>\n

Compassion is not charity. Not pity. It\u2019s radical attention: I see you, even if you\u2019re different; you matter to me, even if I don\u2019t fully understand you. Your pain concerns me, even if I don\u2019t share it.<\/p>\n

It means acknowledging the other\u2019s fragility without taking advantage of it. Listening without trying to fix. Being there without expecting gratitude. And when needed, it acts \u2014 with hands, with voice, with time. Sometimes with silence.<\/p>\n

Not hating has become almost an act of rebellion. Not reacting with cynicism, another. Looking without judging, a third. And this is where compassion appears: not as a private virtue, but as a public ethic.<\/p>\n

Tenderness doesn\u2019t make noise, but it transforms<\/h6>\n

We\u2019ve been trained for quick replies, sharp tweets, instant outrage. But tenderness doesn\u2019t make noise \u2014 and yet, it transforms. A quiet gesture. A word that doesn\u2019t seek applause. Help that isn\u2019t shown off. These are the things that don\u2019t make headlines, but they do light up lives.<\/p>\n

When you choose to care, you care for yourself too. Because compassion, properly understood, not only embraces others \u2014 it softens the way you see yourself. And in a culture that rewards cynicism, that is almost revolutionary.<\/p>\n

Helping is being\u2026 and doing<\/h6>\n

Helping others isn\u2019t always about grand gestures. Sometimes it\u2019s simply staying. Not running away from someone\u2019s pain. Not saying “cheer up” as a reflex, but “I\u2019m here” with genuine presence.<\/p>\n

Writer and activist Valeria Luiselli<\/em>, who has worked with migrant children at the US border, put it perfectly: “Sometimes the only thing we can offer is our attention. But that\u2019s enough”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Still, accompanying isn\u2019t always enough. Sometimes you have to act. Because in a world that normalises indifference, helping means getting involved, committing, doing.<\/p>\n

Contagious compassion<\/h6>\n

In “The Salt of the Earth”<\/em>, Wim Wenders<\/em>\u2019 documentary on Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado<\/em>, the photographer recalls his decades documenting human horror. What struck him most, he says, wasn\u2019t the violence itself, but “how contagious hate is”<\/em>. And it is. Hate travels faster than tenderness. It becomes habit.<\/p>\n

But compassion is also contagious. A mother who teaches her child not to mock. A teacher who listens. A doctor who looks someone in the eye. A stranger who helps without expecting anything in return. All of that is contagious. It just doesn\u2019t make noise. But it changes things.<\/p>\n

Compassion and politics: a necessary alliance<\/h6>\n

Many political discourses dismiss compassion. They portray it as weakness. As a barrier. But history proves the opposite: without compassion, there can be no true justice. Justice that isn\u2019t rooted in recognising the other is nothing more than punishment.<\/p>\n

To show compassion is not to excuse. It\u2019s to understand. It\u2019s to stop reducing others to labels. And above all, it\u2019s refusing to hate by default. And that, today, is revolutionary.<\/p>\n

Humanity lives in the gesture<\/h6>\n

Compassion isn\u2019t a fleeting emotion. It\u2019s a choice. A way of inhabiting the world. A reminder that our humanity doesn\u2019t lie in the spotlight, but in the cracks. Not in what we show, but in how we look at others when they\u2019re broken.<\/p>\n
