Last Monday, millions of households across Spain and Portugal were plunged into darkness. The electrical silence was more than just a technical failure; it was an involuntary pause, a whisper from the reality that lies behind our hyperconnected routines. Suddenly, without warning, the constant hum of electricity\u2014that invisible heartbeat powering our modern lives\u2014came to a halt. Now what?<\/p>\n

Journalist Marta Peirano<\/em> has been warning us for years: “The system doesn\u2019t just depend on electricity, but on our blind faith that it will never fail.”<\/em> She wasn\u2019t just talking about power grids or servers, but about something deeper: our relationship with the world, filtered through screens, wires and algorithms.<\/p>\n

The blackout wasn\u2019t the end of the world. But it was a brilliant metaphor\u2014ironically so\u2014for our fragility. When the lights go out, so does the illusion that everything is under control. Wi-Fi vanishes. The lift stops. Notifications cease to arrive. And we\u2014children of a century lit by artificial brightness\u2014come face to face with what we\u2019ve forgotten: darkness as origin. Time without urgency. Thought without noise.<\/p>\n

The ancient philosophers understood that knowledge is born not in motion, but in pause. That emptiness is not a threat, but a possibility. Epicurus spoke of ataraxia<\/em>\u2014that rare calm which only appears when the outer clamour subsides. What if the blackout was, for a moment, a call to recover that serenity?<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, experts search for the cause: technical faults? Issues with renewable energy synchronisation? A cyberattack? But here at CC\/magazine<\/em>, we\u2019re less interested in the what<\/em> and more in the why<\/em>. What is this blackout here to teach us? Perhaps that we are far less self-sufficient than we believe. That light is no guarantee. That behind every switch lies a fragile web of decisions, resources and risks. And above all, that the real world\u2014the tactile one, where conversations happen without emojis and glances without filters\u2014still waits to be rediscovered when the current fails.<\/p>\n

We live in an age that glorifies immediacy. Where every second is monetised, every silence uncomfortable, and every moment must be shared to matter. But what if meaning lies precisely in the unshared? In what happens when no one is looking at a screen?<\/p>\n

The blackout was also a crack in the narrative of control. It reminded us that even the most advanced systems can falter. That technology is not synonymous with infallibility. That sustainability is not a trend, but a structural urgency. And perhaps, that we should have more conversations about how we want to live\u2014not just how we want to consume.<\/p>\n

In a world that drives us towards hyperconnection, relentless output and absolute dependency on the immediate, the blackout was a brief poem. A haiku in the midst of digital dystopia. A reminder that the present can still be lived without a battery. A flicker of vulnerability that, for a few seconds, made us look inward.<\/p>\n

The lights are back, yes.
But let\u2019s hope this shadow taught us how to see.<\/p>\n
