Her distinctive use of patterns, colours, and symbols has given rise to immersive and deeply personal works that transcend cultural boundaries.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immersive installations and the debut of a new infinity room<\/h6>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition features ten of <em>Kusama<\/em>\u2019s iconic immersive installations\u2014the largest number ever assembled in a single venue. Among the highlights is the debut of the previously unseen work,\u00a0<em>Infinity Mirrored Room\u2013My Heart is Filled to the Brim with Sparkling Light<\/em>\u00a0(2024), which invites visitors into a spectacular space evoking a celestial, seemingly infinite universe. This new piece, which employs mirrors to create the optical illusion of infinity, continues <em>Kusama<\/em>\u2019s tradition of crafting immersive installations that explore her boundless vision.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI, Kusama, am the modern Alice in Wonderland.\u201d Yayoi Kusama<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition features ten of <em>Kusama<\/em>\u2019s iconic immersive installations\u2014the largest number ever assembled in one place. Her recurring use of dots, nets, and infinity not only reflects her fascination with the cosmos but also serves as a way to cope with the hallucinations that have accompanied her since childhood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this retrospective, a special section focuses on the influence of her Japanese roots, highlighting her\u00a0<em>My Eternal Soul <\/em>series. The installation consists of 1,400 stainless steel spheres that infinitely reflect their surroundings, creating an immersive and deeply symbolic landscape inspired by the Greek myth of <em>Narcissus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>NGV<\/em>\u2019s public spaces have also been transformed by <em>Kusama<\/em>\u2019s signature polka dots. Site-specific works include an intervention on the museum\u2019s iconic water wall and\u00a0<em>Dots Obsession<\/em>, an installation featuring giant inflatable spheres floating above visitors in the Great Hall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, outside the museum, more than 60 trees along St. Kilda Road have been wrapped in pink-and-white polka dots, creating a work titled\u00a0<em>Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art and legacy in expansion<\/h6>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The retrospective not only celebrates <em>Kusama<\/em>&#8216;s visual works but also highlights her activism, fashion design, and performance art from the late 1960s. A special section features photographs, letters, magazines, and archival posters documenting how <em>Kusama<\/em> used her happenings as vehicles to explore radical ideas such as sexual liberation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>NGV<\/em> complements the exhibition with public programs, including\u00a0<em>Friday Nights at the NGV<\/em>\u00a0(from December 20 to April 18) and collaborations with Asia TOPA, the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts Festival in Australia. Together with <em>Arts Centre Melbourne<\/em>, they will present\u00a0<em>Pulau<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Island<\/em>), a response to <em>Kusama<\/em>\u2019s iconic work by choreographer <em>Melanie Lane<\/em>, performed in the Great Hall over two evenings on February 22 and 23, 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, the <em>NGV<\/em>\u2019s free children\u2019s gallery hosts <em>The Obliteration Room<\/em>\u00a0(2002\u2013present), a large-scale interactive installation inviting audiences of all ages to cover an entirely white domestic interior with a kaleidoscope of colorful dots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout her career, <em>Kusama<\/em> has used dots and other repetitive forms to cover various surfaces and fill entire rooms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She refers to this process as <em>&#8220;obliteration&#8221;<\/em>, a concept central to her artistic practice, symbolizing the fragmentation of something to return it to the universe.
