A few weeks ago, we shared the program with you<\/a> to showcase the scale of this festival, which celebrated its eleventh edition this year. The truth is that besides being very comprehensive, it has been very diverse and interesting, mainly due to the matches between design brands and artistic and\/or gastronomic proposals. These synergies and the conquest of new spaces elevated the various exhibitions and presentations to another level.<\/p>\n

News and Presentations Part 1<\/strong><\/p>\n

As you can imagine, there were numerous presentations and new releases, so we have divided the most notable inspirations from the festival into two parts. Here is the first part:<\/p>\n

1. NoDe Exhibition: A Glimpse into the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n

House of Nordic Design<\/em><\/a> presented a beautiful exhibition curated by Natalia S\u00e1nchez<\/em>, founder of HOND<\/em>, featuring designs and artworks from the next generation of designers from Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.<\/p>\n

This exhibition highlighted the innovative and passionate work of 28 young designers representing the future of Nordic design, whose creations embody creativity, sustainability, and avant-garde spirit. Notable names among them include: Anne Nowak<\/em>, Anton Mikkonen<\/em>, Aaron Wessels \/ Studio Wes<\/em>, Atelier Mar\u00e9e, A Seat in Siena<\/em>, Bellamoli Studio<\/em>, Better<\/em> Weather<\/em>, Carlberg Design<\/em>, Dain Kang<\/em>, Gabi Humnicki<\/em>, Kajsa Willner<\/em>, Linda Weimann<\/em>, Lisa Darland<\/em>, Live Berg<\/em>, MMH Objects<\/em>, Moa Markgren<\/em>, Netta Kandelin<\/em>, Plain Weavers<\/em>, Reeta Laine<\/em>, Sissel Warringa<\/em>, Shunsuke Koya<\/em>, Snedker Studio<\/em>, Stine Mikkelsen<\/em>, Studio Kasa Kasa<\/em>, Studio My Com\u00e9t<\/em>, Tale Berger H\u00f8lmebakk<\/em>, Tessa Lulu Kaner<\/em>, and Tobias Berg Design<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As you can see from the images, the exhibition, located in a beautiful apartment in the center of Copenhagen, is more than just a design showcase. Each piece in the exhibition has a story behind it, as well as innovative ideas that offer a new perspective on the enduring principles of Nordic design.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

All the exhibited works, from furniture and lighting to textiles and conceptual pieces, combined traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Kaufmann Keramik & Studio Force Majeure<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ceramics are at their peak, and Kaufmann Keramik<\/em><\/a> demonstrates this with the incredible and endless possibilities of their impressive handcrafted ceramics applied to interior and object design.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Kaufmann Keramik<\/em>, based in Rehau in northern Bavaria, is a leading manufacturer of high-quality ceramics for handmade stoves and walls, as well as room dividers and ceramic objects. They constantly collaborate with designers and architectural studios, which is evident in each and every one of their different collections.<\/p>\n

\n

During 3daysofdesign<\/em>, they presented new ceramic collections for stoves, walls, furniture, and objects in a spectacular space, Studio Force Majeure<\/em><\/a>, which further enhanced the unique harmony of colors and materials characteristic of Kaufmann Keramik<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In addition to their current wall ceramics collection FACES<\/em> and the room divider SAHEL<\/em>, one of our favorite pieces was the freeform bench YUMA<\/em>, designed by Sebastian Herkner<\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

3. The New Headboard System by Matteo Fogale for ReFramed & Objective Studies<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

ReFramed<\/em><\/a> presented a new and innovative project: the Headboard System, designed by Matteo Fogale<\/em>, co-founder of Objective Studies<\/em>. This aesthetically beautiful headboard system is mounted on a natural anodized aluminum profile, and it is very comfortable and versatile, offering multiple options for use and functionality. It is easy to assemble, easy to clean, and the fabrics used are from Kvadrat\/Raf Simons<\/em> and Sahco<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

All ReFramed<\/em><\/a> beds are produced by the industry leader Norsk Hydro<\/em><\/a>, whose clients include Rolls Royce <\/em>and HAY<\/em>. They are made from Hydro Circal aluminum, which consists of 82% recycled material from old car parts and other repurposed aluminum items.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the same space, Refugio<\/em>, the team from Objective Studies<\/em><\/a> also launched their new online store, a recently created digital platform founded by digital expert Lijana Norkaityte<\/em> and furniture designer and creative director Matteo Fogale<\/em>. Through this platform, they present distinctive objects and furniture where craftsmanship, materials, composition, and context are relevant. They only select and present products a few times a year, which makes it very exclusive. Their mission is to bring equity to the design industry by fostering new talent through the presentation of exceptional and innovative work. Therefore, they are fully committed to promoting a supportive environment for designers to help them connect with the right audiences.<\/p>\n

\n

4. Ferm Living & The Art of Making<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ferm Living<\/a><\/em> presented “The Art of Making”<\/em>, a narrative behind the creation of their most iconic products, taking us on a journey from the initial hand-drawn sketches to the final result. It also allowed us to learn the stories behind each piece. Very interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Ferm Living<\/em>, “The Art of Making”<\/em> is a celebration of craftsmanship and a tribute to artisans, time-honored techniques, and emerging technologies that bring their products to life. They emphasized the processes required to bring their delicate and inspiring creations to fruition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n

Dae Lamp:<\/u>\u00a0This was one of the standout pieces of the exhibition. With clear reminiscences of the ethereal elegance of the Pieridae<\/em> butterfly chrysalis, the lamp combines a delicate non-woven polymeric material with an organic, cocoon-like shape. Its appearance transcends mere functionality, approaching a true work of art.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Dedali Vase<\/u>: This piece is a testament to the intricate forms and unprecedented precision that can be achieved through 3D printing technology. With fascinating labyrinthine structures and delicate details, the vase is created through the digital layering of extruded clay. Fascinating!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

After the presentation, a very special dinner was held in Ferm Living<\/em>\u2019s incredible showroom, prepared by chef Jonas Harboe Frederiksen<\/em> of Pink Oyster<\/em><\/a>, who crafted true delights. It was memorable!<\/p>\n

5. GUBI\u2019s Autumn Novelties<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tactile Encounters<\/em> is GUBI<\/em><\/a>‘s invitation to celebrate the sensory richness of spaces, where aesthetics and emotions align harmoniously.<\/p>\n

The visual concept of Tactile Encounters<\/em> is inspired by the work of Anni<\/em> and Josef Albers<\/em>, the pioneering Bauhaus<\/em> artists of the 20th century whose work transformed our understanding of the relationship between color and perception, art, and craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n

Anni<\/em>‘s work, deeply rooted in the relationship between color and texture in textiles, transcended the boundaries of fabric, elevating the beauty of textile to the level of art. Concurrently, Josef<\/em>‘s writings on color theory, along with works like the abstract painting series “Homage to the Square”<\/em>, explore the impact of color and composition, and how shapes and layers influence visual experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Looking ahead to this autumn, in addition to new editions of furniture and lighting by artists such as Pierre Paulin<\/em> and Mathieu Mat\u00e9got<\/em>, GUBI<\/em> introduced new ideas regarding innovative materials from contemporary studios like Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt<\/em> and GamFratesi<\/em>. The new releases are an exploration of materiality, encompassing the rawness of natural stone, the polished perfection of plexiglass, the malleability of metal, the extraordinary potential of new material technologies, and the aesthetic possibilities of a material often overlooked: light.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Dedar<\/em><\/a>, the renowned Italian textile design house, has partnered with GUBI<\/em> to leave its mark on the Beetle<\/em>, Bat<\/em>, and GT Lounge<\/em> collections through exquisite prints inspired by the hypnotic pattern of stripes found in large felines.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As if that weren’t enough, Denmark’s esteemed leather manufacturers, S\u00f8rensen<\/em><\/a>, and the design studio GamFratesi<\/em> <\/a>have also joined forces with GUBI<\/em> to take us on a journey through Europe’s landscapes, inspired by the colors of the natural world. S\u00f8rensen<\/em>‘s new Leisure collection of innovative leathers is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. It is soft and durable, with a uniquely hand-sanded finish. Leisure is presented as an upholstery option in shades inspired by locations such as La Valeta in Malta, Fyn in Denmark, or Etna in Italy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n

Lastly, we learned about the GUBI x UNICEF<\/em> project: Young Hopes<\/em>, which involves an exclusive edition of 100 units of the Pacha<\/em> armchair, the iconic design by Pierre Paulin<\/em>, upholstered with surplus high-quality fabrics in three limited color combinations. This campaign will allocate 100% of the profits from the sale of the three limited editions of the Pacha<\/em> to support children in lesser-known crisis areas identified by UNICEF<\/em>, such as Burkina Faso, Myanmar, and Sudan. The funds raised will focus on three critical areas of support: safe childbirth, clean water, and access to education.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

6. The Rocky Baroque Series by Hanna Hansdotter x Kosta Boda<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Kosta Boda<\/em><\/a> and artist Hanna Hansdotter<\/em> continue their successful launch of both the candlestick\u2014which recently received the “Interior Accessory of the Year”<\/em> award at the 2024 Elle Deco Design Awards<\/em> in Sweden\u2014and the Rocky Baroque<\/em> vase. The vase has been presented in three color combinations, as a limited edition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Rocky Baroque<\/em> series navigates between sculpture and utilitarian object, a recurring theme in Hansdotter<\/em>‘s designs. Monumental contours meet raw, jagged surfaces that provide a design as distinctive as it is decorative.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The vase unveiled at 3daysofdesign<\/em> is the successor to the iconic candlestick series introduced in 2023 in three sizes and seven color combinations. Like the candlesticks, the vase has been crafted by artisans at Kosta Boda<\/em> in the Kosta<\/em> Glassworks in Sweden, founded in 1742. The complex production process includes the use of a vintage 1940s cutter, employed to complete the graphic molds. Once the profile and contours of the form are established, Hansdotter<\/em> meticulously removes graphite pieces to accentuate the iconic appearance and tactile sensation reminiscent of a rock.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. New Editions from Massproductions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Among the various novelties presented by the Massproductions<\/em><\/a> team, the furniture company founded by Chris Martin<\/em> and Magnus Eleb\u00e4ck<\/em> nearly 15 years ago, these were the most notable:<\/p>\n

Gridlock<\/u>\u00a0is a new high-quality wall shelving system made from FSC<\/em>-certified ash wood, featuring shelves that can be customized according to our needs with a simple accessory. A key feature of this design is that the shelves can be precisely placed in grids, creating a sense of “perfect” order both at home and in the office. In addition to shelves available in two depths, Gridlock<\/em> also offers a desktop component to create a more complete workspace.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Woodwerk Chair<\/u>\u00a0is a spectacular chair designed by Chris Martin<\/em>, Chief Designer at Massproductions<\/em>. Not only is it beautiful, but it’s also incredibly comfortable. Although its official launch is scheduled for October, we had the opportunity to preview it. This exclusive piece is entirely manufactured in the same factory using 5-axis CNC machinery. It is entirely molded from solid wood through sophisticated processes, resulting in an astonishing outcome.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Patch<\/u>\u00a0is a series of modular sofas, cozy, informal, and solemn, characterized by distinctive diamond-shaped back panels and featuring a construction that minimizes the use of polyurethane foam, incorporating steel springs from the bedding industry and smart corners.<\/p>\n

Storm x Massproductions Buffer – The Pink Edition<\/u>\u00a0is a bookend created in collaboration with Storm<\/em><\/a>, a fashion and lifestyle concept store based in Copenhagen. This collaboration, celebrating Storm<\/em>‘s 30th anniversary, is executed in their signature pink color. The Buffer<\/em> bookend became very popular and sold out quickly upon its initial release in March 2024. It is made from three laser-cut Finnish steel plates (including 20% recycled steel), weighing over 1.3 kg, and equipped with non-slip feet.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Additionally, during 3daysofdesign<\/em>, they also presented the MMMTV<\/em> installation, an abstract collage paying tribute to the television culture of the 1990s (and beyond) that has shaped many products in their collection.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n

8. ReThink, the Seventh Edition of Kvadrat’s Design Projects<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Kvadrat<\/em><\/a> presented ReThink<\/em>, an exhibition showcasing the work of 12 emerging and established creatives. From Iceland to Venezuela, from Beijing to Brooklyn, the designers in this exhibition have focused on what responsible design means to them through working with Kvadrat<\/em>‘s circular, regenerative, and recycled materials.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participants in ReThink<\/em> were selected by curators Jeffrey Bernett<\/em>, Anniina Koivu<\/em>, Johanna Agerman Ross<\/em>, Jane Withers<\/em>, and Njusja de Gier<\/em>, based on the designers’ ability to creatively respond to sustainable approaches and thinking. The designers had freedom of action and, through their creations, demonstrated how various aspects of sustainability can shape design, generate material innovation, foster community collaboration, and cultivate new aesthetic values.<\/p>\n

Some projects involved collaboration with the local community, enriching the design process and fostering connections with broader social and cultural contexts, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in sustainable design practices. Others drew inspiration from nature, highlighting the interconnectedness between design and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n

These projects explore the relationship between water and textile production, incorporating natural materials such as wool and sisal, or creating designs that reflect the vitality of marine life, emphasizing a commitment to preserve and protect our natural resources.<\/p>\n

Others shared principles of circularity through the reuse of materials or the incorporation of recyclable elements. This reflects a broader shift towards circular design principles, where products are designed with longevity, recyclability, and resource efficiency in mind.<\/p>\n

We found all of them extraordinary, and here are a few highlights:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n

Fibre Walls<\/u>: The Amsterdam-based studio Bel\u00e9n<\/em><\/a> has utilized 100% biodegradable building materials to develop Fiber Walls<\/em>, an environmentally friendly material intended for interior use. Traditionally, acoustics, insulation, texture, and color have been treated as separate elements in construction, but Bel\u00e9n<\/em>‘s monomaterial merges and even omits layers while maintaining performance. The material, which combines superior acoustic properties, insulation, construction, and a finishing layer, is manufactured by blending custom-developed biodegradable binders with wool sourced from Kvadrat<\/em>‘s largest waste stream.<\/p>\n

Augmented Curtain<\/u>:\u00a0Christophe Guberan<\/em> and Camille Blin <\/em>have created Augmented Curtain<\/em>, exploring the potential of a curtain as an insulating material in living spaces, using 3D weaving technology to produce a curtain that can reduce heat loss in winter and moderate temperature rise in summer. Guberan<\/em> and Blin<\/em> employed these techniques with Reflect upholstery fabric thread, made from recycled PET, to create lightweight curtains composed of small tubes that trap air, forming an insulating barrier between the window and the room. The 3D woven structure allows for various color combinations, creating contrasts between warm and cool tones on different sides and within the layers of the fabric.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Good Shepherd<\/u>:\u00a0Fernando Laposse<\/em><\/a> presents The Good Shepherd<\/em>, a playful rocking bench inspired by the practice of sheep herding on horseback in Mexico. Laposse<\/em> chose to work with Kvadrat<\/em>‘s wool products, as the company’s wool production relies on maintaining pastures for grazing. The bench’s silhouette resembles that of a horse with a wooden seat upholstered in Kvadrat’s Vidar 4<\/em>, atop a blanket made of Recheck<\/em>. The body is covered in knotted sisal, derived from agave cultivated by the designer as part of a land and community regeneration project in Mexico. The bench has been designed so that its parts can be reused or recycled.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Subject: Scooter<\/u>:\u00a0Mar\u00eda-Elena Pombo<\/em>, also known as Fragmentario<\/em><\/a>, seized the opportunity of ReThink<\/em> to participate in a collaborative project with young residents of a Venezuelan children’s home, who constructed scooters using Kvadrat<\/em> Really’s<\/em> Textile Board<\/em>, a circular material made from textiles at the end of their life cycle. While creating the scooters, the children applied a variety of new skills and learned about sustainability from both a global and local perspective. The scooters will be used not only for recreational purposes but also as a means of transportation.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Tag<\/u>: Many companies engage in greenwashing, which is why Maxwell Ashford<\/em><\/a> created Tag<\/em> to openly display the environmental credentials of textiles in a thought-provoking manner. He has designed beautiful tote bags made from various Kvadrat<\/em> textiles, featuring an extra-large tag indicating greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental cost of production. These bags can be purchased by donating to the environmental preservation NGO “Cool Earth”<\/em> via a QR<\/em> code. Each bag is priced at 8 times its ecological cost, clearly stated on its tag.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Octopoda<\/u>: Inspired by the marine environment and the vibrant colors of the sea, Patricia Urquiola<\/em><\/a> has created a giant piece resembling an octopus using different shades of Sport, the innovative textile she designed for Kvadrat<\/em>. Sport is the world’s first upholstery made from recycled polyester, sourced from ocean-collected discarded plastic. Beyond its visual appeal, the installation aims to convey an important message about waste repurposing and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n

\n

9. Openhouse x Expormim, Marset & Nani Marquina<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This year, there was also a strong presence of Spanish brands at the festival. In this case, Openhouse <\/em><\/a>magazine and Expormim<\/em> organized an exhibition in collaboration with Nanimarquina<\/em><\/a> and with the participation of Marset<\/em><\/a> at the Ruby Atelier Gallery<\/em>. Named “The Intimate Side of Art”<\/em>, the installation prompted us to reflect on the relevance of having a personal space to evoke our identity as creators.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Under the creative direction of stylist Henriette Schou<\/em>, the gallery became a highly evocative backdrop, dressed by Expormim<\/em><\/a> with their latest designs from creators like David L\u00f3pez Quincoces<\/em> and Norm Architects<\/em>, among others. Nanimarquina<\/em> presented their 2024 collections, featuring standout pieces such as Inga Semp\u00e9<\/em>‘s captivating Colorado<\/em> collection, new additions to the Chillida<\/em> collection, and artistic collections like Wabi Sabi<\/em> and Pearls<\/em> by Nani Marquina<\/em> and Sabine Finkenauer<\/em> respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Marset<\/em>‘s exquisite lamp collection brought together all these brands, creating a warm and sophisticated atmosphere ideal for the various talks they organized. Participants included Joanna Laajisto<\/em>, designer of Marset’s Ilhana<\/em> lamp, Norm<\/em> Architects<\/em>, creators of Expormim’s Cask<\/em> collection, Inga Semp\u00e9<\/em>, designer of Nanimarquina’s Colorado<\/em> collection, and a collaborative effort between Openhouse<\/em>, Henriette Schou<\/em>, and David L\u00f3pez Quincoces<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On the same day, we shared a very special dinner with Saba<\/em><\/a> and Openhouse<\/em> magazine at Soho House<\/em>, who also organized a unique exhibition showcasing the latest collections designed by Zanellato\/Bortotto<\/em> along with the magazine’s most acclaimed photographs. The purpose was to celebrate nature in conjunction with the 2024 edition of 3daysofdesign<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. Worms, Monsters and Toto by HEM<\/strong><\/p>\n

We’re big fans of HEM<\/em><\/a>, and it was a pleasure to firsthand experience their new creative designs. Some were extensions of their well-established furniture families, while for the first time, they introduced exclusive reissues of long-forgotten icons such as the iconic Experiment<\/em> chair by renowned Finnish designer Yrj\u00f6 Kukkapuro<\/em>, the bold and eye-catching Bullnose<\/em> chair by Marco Campardo<\/em>, along with the innovative Worm<\/em> coffee tables by Soft Baroque<\/em>, the comfy and cool Puffy<\/em> sofa by Faye Toogood<\/em>, and the captivating Toto<\/em> lamps envisioned by Fabien Cappello<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Also showcased at their space on Pal\u00e6gade 8 were their latest limited edition objects from the HEM X<\/em> series, a true testament to HEM<\/em>‘s curiosity in discovering the next generation of pioneering creatives.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n

11. V\u00e9rtigo by Offecct and Claesson Koivisto Rune<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

To commemorate 25 years of collaboration between Claesson Koivisto Rune<\/em><\/a> and Offecct<\/em><\/a>, the award-winning V\u00e9rtigo<\/em> table has been redesigned and is now available in three new sizes, shapes, and three striking colors. What’s intriguing about this table is that through a sophisticated arrangement of mirrors, it creates an illusion of infinite depth contained within architectural refinement.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

During 3daysofdesign<\/em>, they also presented a book in which Claesson Koivisto Rune<\/em> describes this collaborative journey with Offecct<\/em>, while reflecting on their work in relation to art, architecture, and design. This is the sixth book in a series published by Offecct<\/em> aimed at providing their clients with a deeper understanding of their collaborations and the ideas behind their designs. These books have been developed and produced by the celebrated Swedish graphic design studio Henrik Nygren<\/em> Design<\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

12. 360\u00b0 Exhibition by the Royal Danish Academy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recently graduated designers and architects from the Royal Danish Academy<\/em><\/a>, representing its four programs: Furniture Design, Spatial Design, Strategic Design, and Fashion, Garment, and Textile Design, invited us to explore their design processes during 3daysofdesign<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Through a 360\u00b0 exhibition held at Copenhagen’s former industrial site Refshale\u00f8en, fifty newly graduated designers and architects showcased their methods, processes, and provided a comprehensive view of current trends within the Danish architecture and design scene.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The vibrant exhibition was organized with support from the Institute of Architecture and Design<\/em> at the Royal Danish Academy<\/em>. It consisted of two parts: the first featured analyses, studies, inspiration, and experimentation, while the second presented the final products of each project in a combined multidisciplinary installation.<\/p>\n
