The years go by, (12 to be precise) and one day, <em>Nora <\/em>discovers that <em>Hae Sung<\/em>\u00a0is looking for her and decides to get back in touch with him. From that moment on, they establish an epistolary friendship through <em>Skype <\/em>in spite of the time difference. And although they don\u2019t confess their feelings for one another, you can tell that they are still very much attracted to each other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After some time in this rather complicated situation, <em>Nora<\/em> decides they should stop talking for a while in order to focus on her life because she realises they have different goals. Once again, another twelve years go by and during that time they continue to live their lives until they see each other for the first time, 24 years later, in New York\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-67608 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cartel_vidaspasadas-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1829\" height=\"2560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cartel_vidaspasadas-scaled.jpeg 1829w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cartel_vidaspasadas-214x300.jpeg 214w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cartel_vidaspasadas-304x425.jpeg 304w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cartel_vidaspasadas-768x1075.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cartel_vidaspasadas-1097x1536.jpeg 1097w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Cartel_vidaspasadas-1463x2048.jpeg 1463w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1829px) 100vw, 1829px\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>An autobiographical story<\/h6>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Debut director, <em>Celine Song,<\/em>\u00a0tells us a story that is partially autobiographical, full of sensibility, empathy and tenderness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A story in which destiny, the choices made, and first love intertwine resulting in a long story of ups and downs, that makes her question her journey through life, despite being happy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Song\u00a0<\/em>emigrated with her parents from Canada when she was 12 years old and later trained as a playwright at Columbia University (New York). She is married to <em>Justin Kuritzkes <\/em>who is also a writer and playwright, and she herself experienced a scene that was very similar to that shown at the beginning of the film.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her case, the bar chosen was <em>Speakeasy<\/em>\u00a0<em>Please Don&#8217;t Tell<\/em>, and the person that accompanied them was a Korean childhood friend of hers.<\/p>\n<h6>Her first childhood love and the toll of absence<\/h6>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing the Korean Canadian film maker manages to portray really well is the evolution of that first love when the protagonists have grown up, and how the passing of time and the absence between them has transformed it into their mutual idealization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because when reality is not there to wear down the abstract concept of that immaculate first love, it becomes impossible for them to see each other objectively. It\u2019s as if they are trapped in a <em>\u201cwhat if\u2026?\u201d <\/em>\u00a0impeded by destiny and their own actions.<\/p>\n<h6>What could have been but was not<\/h6>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as platonic love, <em>Song<\/em>\u00a0also reflects on how people constantly evolve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She makes it clear that, in spite of everything, we are no longer who we were, and we will not in the future be who we are now. Time does not stand still, and our experiences and circumstances shape our character and our course in life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in <em>&#8220;Past Lives&#8221; <\/em>there are many moments in which it seems that the very special chemistry they have, that time has not managed to erase, could become that panacea that will detonate everything\u2026 And that is probably thanks to the romantic notion that we all unwittingly have, although it is more fantasy than reality.<\/p>\n<h6>In-yeon: the reunion of two souls that were soulmates in past lives<\/h6>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film makes reference to the Korean word\u00a0<em>In-yeon<\/em>.\u00a0That concept means &#8220;providence&#8221; or &#8220;fate&#8221; and that is based on this idea that when two strangers walk by each other on the street and their clothes accidentally brush, it means there must have been something between them in their past lives.<\/p>\n<p>However, immediately after that, <em>Nora<\/em>\u00a0confesses to\u00a0<em>Arthur<\/em>, her future husband with whom she is having the conversation, that this is in fact a pretext Koreans use to seduce someone&#8230;<\/p>\n<h6>Maybe in another life&#8230;<\/h6>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end of\u00a0<em>&#8220;Past Lives &#8220;<\/em>\u00a0is amazing. It isn\u2019t what you expect, but it is so real it stings because of the unconscious desire to find happiness in a box.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Greta Lee<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Nora<\/em>) and\u00a0<em>Yoo Teo<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Hae Sung<\/em>) as well as<em> John Magaro<\/em>\u00a0who plays<em> Arthur<\/em>, <em>Nora<\/em><em>\u2019s husband<\/em>, offer magnificent performances throughout the film, and the way they deal with such a complex emotional burden deserves a slow clap.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cThis film talks about the different parts of who we are and that we are different depending on the times.\u201d Song<\/h2>\n<h6>Song and Kuritzkes: a winning couple<\/h6>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the excellent response to\u00a0<em>&#8220;Past Lives&#8221;<\/em>,\u00a0<em>A24<\/em>\u00a0has given the green light to <em>Song\u2019s <\/em>second film: <em>&#8220;Materialists&#8221;<\/em>, a romcom set in New York and starring the actor of the moment,\u00a0<em>Jeremy Allen White<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Justin Kuritzkes<\/em>, <em>Celine Song<\/em><em>\u2019s husband<\/em>, is also a playwright and screenwriter, as well as a novelist, who has teamed up with film director<em> Luca Guadagnino<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>(<em>&#8220;Call Me by Your Name&#8221;<\/em>), for whom he has written his next two films:\u00a0<em>&#8220;Challengers&#8221;<\/em>, starring<em> Zendaya<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Josh O&#8217;Connor<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>&#8220;Queer&#8221;,<\/em>\u00a0 an adaptation of the novel of the same name by<em> William S.
