Its objective centres around entertaining and inspiring millions of people, creating connections, sparking debate and reflecting on the world in which we live. A good example of this is the fact that it has been stage to great events such as the world premiere of <em>John Adam<\/em>\u2019s opera<em> &#8220;Nixon in China&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0in 1987 or the performance by London\u2019s Symphony Orchestra at the closing ceremony of the London Olympic Games in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-66802 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/10.-Aerial-view-of-the-Barbican-Centre-CREDIT-Sidd-Khajuria.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"934\" height=\"1401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/10.-Aerial-view-of-the-Barbican-Centre-CREDIT-Sidd-Khajuria.jpg 934w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/10.-Aerial-view-of-the-Barbican-Centre-CREDIT-Sidd-Khajuria-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/10.-Aerial-view-of-the-Barbican-Centre-CREDIT-Sidd-Khajuria-283x425.jpg 283w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/10.-Aerial-view-of-the-Barbican-Centre-CREDIT-Sidd-Khajuria-768x1152.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 934px) 100vw, 934px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This unbeatable hotspot is home to a museum, several concert halls, a cinema, the main theatre, and a conservatory with over 1,500 species of plants and trees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to that, it also has a public library, one of the largest in London, several conference rooms, restaurants, bars, and a picturesque lake, and it\u2019s the permanent base for the London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>Barbican Centre<\/em>\u00a0is set within the surrounding residential complex: the <em>Barbican Estate<\/em>, an area that suffered intense bombing during World War II.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For that reason, it was reconstructed, following the parameters of Brutalist architecture, with concrete and geometrical shapes being the main features.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It consists of a complex building on several levels with numerous points of access. It was designed by architects<em>Chamberlain<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Powell<\/em>\u00a0y\u00a0<em>Bon<\/em>, although in the mid-90s, it was <em>Theo Crosby<\/em>\u00a0who carried out a cosmetic operation of the centre which consisted of adding sculptures and ornaments, in the style of the Arts &amp; Crafts movement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was, however, in 2005, when the complex underwent an even greater refurbishment, and it was the architects from<em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Allford Hall<\/em>\u00a0<em>Monaghan Morris<\/em>\u00a0who designed a complete reform of the circulation and signage, in line with the original Brutalist style of the building.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-66803 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/19.-Foyers-Barbican-Centre-\u00a9-Daniel-Hewitt.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"969\" height=\"1343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/19.-Foyers-Barbican-Centre-\u00a9-Daniel-Hewitt.jpg 969w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/19.-Foyers-Barbican-Centre-\u00a9-Daniel-Hewitt-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/19.-Foyers-Barbican-Centre-\u00a9-Daniel-Hewitt-307x425.jpg 307w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/19.-Foyers-Barbican-Centre-\u00a9-Daniel-Hewitt-768x1064.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 969px) 100vw, 969px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also added an interior bridge that communicates the <em>Silk Street<\/em>\u00a0vestibule with that of the Lakeside. In fact, the Silk Street access, that was previously a road for vehicles,\u00a0 was reformed to give it a pedestrian nature and has become the main entrance to the complex.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cThe Barbican Centre in London is one of the best representations of Brutalist architecture in the world.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this refurbishment, a great part of the decoration that was added as part of the previous reform was eliminated. And the tower of the theatre was covered with glass, turning it into a conservatory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The complete refurbishment of this <em>City of London Corporation\u00a0<\/em>building received the<em> RIBA International Award<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0These awards are the architecture&#8217;s highest global accolades, celebrating buildings from around the world that demonstrate visionary thinking, design excellence and social impact -.<\/p>\n<h6>What to do at the Barbican Centre?<\/h6>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With such a polyhedral nature that is so connected to culture and the arts, the Barbican centre is full of inspiring activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They range from enjoying exhibitions, attending\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barbican.org.uk\/whats-on\/classical-music\">classical music<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barbican.org.uk\/whats-on\/contemporary-music\">contemporary music<\/a> concerts\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barbican.org.uk\/whats-on\/theatre-dance\">a theatre or dance production<\/a>, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barbican.org.uk\/whats-on\/cinema\">watching a film at the cinema<\/a>, grabbing a bite or having a drink, buying a designer item from its lovely shop or diving into the\u00a0<em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barbican.org.uk\/whats-on\/2023\/event\/the-conservatory-x-ranjani-shettar\">Barbican Conservatory<\/a><\/u><\/em>, the second most important botanical gardens in London.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, on 29th September, they launched a site-specific installation created by Indian sculptor,\u00a0<em>Ranjani Shettar<\/em>.\u00a0Her sculptures are inspired in the complexity of nature, and she has created them using a variety of materials such as wood, stainless steel, muslin, lacquer, and techniques that have been adapted from traditional Indian craftsmanship. This concrete labyrinth is an oasis in the midst of a buzzing London.
