This iconic building by the architect\u00a0Frank Gehry<\/em>, the Pritzker Prize<\/em> winner <\/em>and author of the Guggenheim Museum <\/em>in\u00a0Bilbao among other architectural milestones, is located on the creative campus of the city and has managed to revolutionise the skyline of this French town.<\/p>\n LUMA Arles<\/em> consists of a twisted geometrical structure with a cylindrical base which is cladded with 11,000 panels of stainless steel placed in an irregular pattern which reflect the sun, reflections which play with the light at different times of the day. The interior holds exhibitions, a cafeteria, art galleries, spaces for cultural projects and research that are distributed over nine floors. A Roman amphitheatre is the inspiration for the base. The painting “Starry Night”<\/em>\u00a0by Vincent van Gogh<\/em> and the clusters of rock from the region inspired the top.<\/p>\n Local inspiration becomes more apparent in the circular glass and steel atrium on two levels that acts as the base of the structure that borrows its shape from the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Arles, while the multi-layered facade of the tower echoes the sheer limestone cliffs in the region..<\/p>\n It has taken over ten years for this ambitious project to materialise, a project that is part of the Parc des Ateliers, as this former 11 hectare railway wasteland is known. It sits alongside seven old factories belonging to the industrial legacy of the 19th century that were renovated by\u00a0Selldorf Architects<\/em>\u00a0and that are now used to house exhibitions, presentations and even as homes for artists.<\/p>\n The surrounding gardens and the public park were designed by the landscape architect\u00a0Bas Smets<\/em>. It was conceived as a journey through the fauna and flora of the region, and its 4 hectares are also used to house artwork, sculptures and installations.<\/p>\n It opened its doors in style: with installations purposely-built for the site by artists such as Olafur Eliasson<\/em>, who placed a large circular mirror that gently rotates on the ceiling in a stairwell thus destabilizing the visual perception of the visitor,\u00a0Dominique\u00a0Gonzalez-Foerster<\/em>,\u00a0Carsten H\u00f6ller<\/em>,\u00a0Liam Gillick<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>Etel Adnan<\/em>,\u00a0Philippe Parreno<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Christian Marclay<\/em>.<\/p>\n The Tower <\/em>is also home to the “archives” of the Emmanuel Hoffmann Collection<\/em>, that includes pieces by\u00a0Alighiero Boetti<\/em>,\u00a0Richard Long<\/em>,\u00a0Bruce Nauman<\/em>,\u00a0Duane Michals<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>Rosemarie Trockel<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Cy Twombly<\/em>. And to the heart of the LUMA Collection<\/em>\u00a0in which there are works by\u00a0<\/em>Rirkrit Tiravanija<\/em>,\u00a0Arthur Jafa<\/em>,\u00a0Hans-Peter Feldman<\/em>,\u00a0Urs Fischer<\/em>,\u00a0Paul McCarthy<\/em>…<\/p>\n Some of the exhibitions at\u00a0LUMA Arles<\/em>\u00a0this year come from Les Rencontres d’Arles<\/em>, the photography festival we mentioned earlier. They are all extraordinary and some of the artists featured are:<\/p>\n “Constellation” by\u00a0Diane Arbus:<\/strong>\u00a0It collates 454 images, some of them unpublished, and as with Diane Arbus<\/em>\u00a0in New York, the spectator is invited to wander, walk around and across the installation that was purposely created. There isn\u2019t one standard route, but infinite possibilities. Each visitor can create their own unique experience at this original and unconventional presentation.<\/p>\n “The Shape of Things” by\u00a0Carrie Mae Weems:<\/strong>\u00a0with cinema techniques and special effects drawn from previous times, such as dioramas, side-shows and Pepper\u2019s Ghost<\/em>, this exhibition is an incisive reflection, powerfully emotional and critical of topics that are deeply rooted in U.S. history and culture and the explosive events of recent years. This monumental set of installations continues with the LUMA Arles<\/em>\u2019 commitment\u00a0to produce complex exhibitions by the most attractive contemporary artists.<\/p>\n “One year” by Christodoulos\u00a0Panayiotou:<\/strong>\u00a0for the first time, the elements of the artist\u2019s whole career are brought together. Series of works that summarise two decades of artistic production. This exhibition unfolds in Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring and concludes with an epilogue in June 2024.<\/p>\n “The Circle &\u00a0The Tempest Society” by\u00a0Bouchra Khalili:<\/strong>\u00a0this exhibition brings together two of Khalili<\/em>\u2019s most important cinema productions:\u00a0“The Tempest Society”<\/em>\u00a0(2017) and\u00a0“The Circle Project”<\/em>\u00a0(2023).\u00a0Together they offer a meditative approach to witnessing surpressed stories, the power of collective imagination embodied in the public storyteller and the montage<\/em> as art capable of resurrecting buried history.<\/p>\n “<\/strong>Chapter 3:\u00a0Agn\u00e8s Varda\u00a0A day without seeing a tree is a waste of a day” by\u00a0<\/strong>Hans-Ulrich Obrist\u00a0<\/strong>Archive:<\/strong>\u00a0this exhibition highlights the crucial role of\u00a0Hans-Ulrich Obrist<\/em>\u00a0in introducing\u00a0Varda<\/em>\u00a0to the art world.\u00a0In 2002, thanks to Christian Boltanski<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Annette Messager<\/em>,\u00a0Obrist<\/em>\u00a0finally got the chance to meet Varda <\/em>and film her in her magical home at 86 rue Daguerre, Paris. After this interview,\u00a0Molly Nesbit<\/em>,\u00a0Rirkrit Tiravanija<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Hans-Ulrich Obrist<\/em> invited Agn\u00e8s Varda<\/em>\u00a0to take part in Utopia Station<\/em>, a section of the 50th Venice Biennale directed by Francesco Bonami<\/em>\u00a0in 2003. Varda<\/em>\u2019s <\/em>proposal marked her debut as “an old film maker but a young artist”<\/em>\u00a0with the installation of her video tryptich\u00a0Patatutopia<\/em>, that celebrates the sprouts and roots of heart-shaped potatoes.<\/p>\n “Dissonant Belonging” by\u00a0Ahlam Shibli:\u00a0<\/strong>this display presents six photography projects carried out between 1997 and 2017 alongside her most recent work created during her residency at LUMA Arles<\/em>. Ahlam Shibli<\/em>\u2019s previous work was often structured around strong tension and binary conflicts. The works in\u00a0“Dissonant Belonging”<\/em> speak of feeling at home and yearning for it.
