“Asteroid City”<\/em> is a really beautiful film from beginning to end, written by\u00a0Anderson<\/em>\u00a0together with\u00a0Roman Coppola<\/em>\u00a0and produced by\u00a0Focus Features<\/a><\/u><\/em>. Everything in it is pure reminiscence, sensibility and good taste.<\/p>\n

When theatre and cinema go hand in hand<\/h6>\n

The film starts in a studio setting that takes us back to the programs of television\u2019s Golden Era, such as “Playhouse 90”<\/em>, that showed work directed by\u00a0John Frankenheimer<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Sidney Lumet<\/em>, and that included the participation of stars such as\u00a0Lee Cobb<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0James Dean<\/em>. At that time, there was no theatre group more famous than the\u00a0Actors Studio<\/em>, where legends such as Dean<\/em>,\u00a0Marlon Brando<\/em>,\u00a0Julie Harris<\/em>,\u00a0Sidney Poitier<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Rod Steiger<\/em>\u00a0studied with Kazan<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Lee Strasberg<\/em>. That\u2019s why for many actors of this generation (together with future film directors and screenwriters), the leap from the stage to the big screen included a stop at these televised dramas.<\/p>\n

As you will be able to see for yourselves, the first scenes of\u00a0Asteroid City <\/em>are in black and white. Bryan Cranston<\/em>, the famous main character in “Breaking Bad”<\/em>, appears on TV, explaining the different parts in the process of creating a written play by a successful playwright, played by Edward Norton<\/em>. The setting of this story is the desert, where its striking and symmetrical visual composition, together with its particular colour palette of primary colours in pastel tones, is once again the undeniable focus point.<\/p>\n

This duality that takes place between these two antagonistic scenarios is really interesting, and allows us to flow from one genre to another without it affecting the essence of the narrative.<\/p>\n

Synopsis<\/h6>\n

The film is divided into three acts with interludes. The setting is the desert town of Asteroid City<\/em>, where different and extravagant stories will unfold during the summer of 1955. All these stories coincide in a motel with bungalows and feature a troubled movie star who is accompanied by his daughter; a widower (Augie Steenbeck<\/em>\u00a0played by\u00a0Jason Schwartzman<\/em>) who is the father of four children whose car has broken down; a teacher with a group of school children; a troupe<\/em>\u00a0of whiz kids; space cadets and families visiting a school convention for future astronomers, etc…<\/p>\n

It will all change on the night of the celebration to honour the achievements of the Junior Stargazers<\/em>, when they receive the unexpected visit of an alien brought to life by\u00a0Jeff Goldblum<\/em>… From that moment on, they will become victims of a quarantine as a result of this visit…<\/p>\n

Chinch\u00f3n: oficial setting of Asteroid City<\/h6>\n

This “cute” western with Martian and cosmic developments\u2026 was filmed in Chinch\u00f3n, a Spanish town in the South East of the Madrid region. And why? Well, because\u00a0Wes Anderson<\/em>\u00a0lives in France and was clear he didn\u2019t want to leave Europe.<\/p>\n

Also, Chinch\u00f3n met the main production requirements: good weather, blue skies, natural lighting needed to construct what would become a completely immersive world, nearby accommodation and a vast flat terrain on which to recreate a North American Midwest landscape.<\/p>\n

A sublime cast of actors<\/h6>\n

Edward Norton<\/em>,\u00a0Jason Schwartzman<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>Scarlett Johansson<\/em>,\u00a0Jeffrey Wright<\/em>,\u00a0Adrien Brody<\/em>,\u00a0Liev Schreiber<\/em>,\u00a0Hope Davis<\/em>,\u00a0Maya Hawke<\/em>,\u00a0Steve Carell<\/em>,\u00a0Matt Dillon<\/em>,\u00a0Willem Dafoe<\/em>,\u00a0Margot Robbie<\/em>, or\u00a0Jeff Goldblum<\/em>… Who could ask for more?<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, this time one of his favourite actors could not be present:\u00a0Bill Murray<\/em>, because when he arrived at Chinch\u00f3n, he tested positive in Covid and was unable to film.<\/p>\n

The best part<\/strong><\/p>\n

The extraordinary scenes through the windows of \u00a0Jason Schwartzman<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Scarlett Johansson\u2019s<\/em> bungalows<\/em>. Watching the beginning of their connection and fascination with each other and how, coming from different worlds and being complete strangers, they are able to “read” each other…<\/p>\n

One of the crucial themes of the film:\u00a0“How to deal with grief?”<\/em>\u00a0Anderson<\/em>\u00a0treats the subject with a lot of care, without having to provide a clear answer.<\/p>\n

The four-way love between Woodrow, <\/em>the brainiac son of\u00a0Jason Schwartzman,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Dinah<\/em>, Scarlett Johansson<\/em>\u2019s daughter<\/em>, and the parents themselves.<\/p>\n

The scene in which the playwright (Edward Norton<\/em>) tries to inspire his actors by asking them to interpret sleeping people and they begin to scream: “You can\u2019t wake up if you don\u2019t fall asleep!”<\/em>. Everything that happens in black and white is an ode to classic cinema and to the actors.<\/p>\n

The good intentions and potentially happy endings.\u00a0Anderson<\/em>\u00a0is still determined to make films for enjoyment and to bring joy and happiness to our hearts.<\/p>\n

The child prodigies and the three orphaned girls. They are all essential to the film. And their innocence and limitless curiosity reminds us of films such as “The Goonies<\/em>“,\u00a0“E.T”<\/em>\u00a0or even “Stranger Things”<\/em>…<\/p>\n

The nod to the Road Runner by Chuck Jones<\/em>\u00a0and the always exquisite visual references.<\/p>\n

The worst part<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bill Murray<\/em>\u2019<\/em>s absence.<\/p>\n

We would have liked the different stories that converge to have been explored in greater depth but that would have implied more footage…<\/p>\n

On the occasion of the very much anticipated release of the new Wes Anderson<\/em> film<\/em>,\u00a0180 Studios<\/em>\u00a0has organised a fantastic exhibition of original film settings, accessories, miniatures, costumes and art work that appear in the film.<\/p>\n

This immersive exhibition<\/a>\u00a0will pull us into the world of Anderson<\/em>\u2019s eleventh full-length feature film, through its installations that show characteristic images and sounds, as well as providing the opportunity of dining at the iconic 1950s restaurant in the film, the\u00a0Luncheonette<\/em>.<\/p>\n

We will also be able to buy limited edition merchandising products such as T-shirts, bags, the script, badges or an exclusive vinyl with the songs from the film:\u00a0“Dear Alien” (Who Art in Heaven)<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0“You Can\u2019t Wake Up If You Don\u2019t Fall Asleep”<\/em>, among other things<\/p>\n

Curious facts:<\/h6>\n

The spaceship from which the alien comes down and the crater which he goes into were made as miniatures; they did not use CGI. The alien was originally conceived as being over 2 metres tall, considerably taller than Jeff Goldblum<\/em>, who is 1.94 m. \u00a0Mark Coulier<\/em>, who won an Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling for “The Iron Lady”<\/em> and “The Grand Budapest Hotel”<\/em>, designed a costume that Goldblum<\/em>\u00a0could use with stilts. Also, the alien we see on screen is a puppet, that is filmed in\u00a0stop motion<\/em>. The interesting thing is that instead of acting in front of a green screen,\u00a0Goldblum<\/em>\u00a0put the costume on and embodied the movements and actions of the celestial visitor. Then,\u00a0<\/em>Andy Gent<\/em>, who in the past created the creatures in “Fantastic Mr. Fox”<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0“Isle of Dogs”<\/em>, created a three-legged alien, unusually large for stop motion work. After testing it out in London,\u00a0Kim Keukelerie<\/em>, recognized for her work with Tim Burton<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Aardman Studios<\/em>, animated the interstellar visitor.<\/p>\n

The mid-century country and western sounds, particularly the disconcerting cries of the baritone Tennessee Ernie Ford<\/em>\u00a0and the choral serenades of\u00a0Roy Rogers<\/em>, inspired the original song, “Dear Alien”<\/em>, written by Jarvis Cocker<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>andAnderson<\/em>. The cowboy band in the film that includes Cocker<\/em>\u00a0and the guitarist Seu Jorge<\/em>, were recorded live.<\/p>\n

Orson Welles<\/em>\u00a0filmed part of “The Immortal Story”<\/em>\u00a0in Chinch\u00f3n, and around the same square and parador hotel where Anderson<\/em>\u2018s team and the cast stayed.<\/p>\n

The town in\u00a0Asteroid City<\/em>, designed by Adam Stockhausen<\/em> who has been a collaborator of\u00a0Anderson<\/em>\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0for a long time now(winning an Oscar for\u00a0“The Grand Budapest Hotel”<\/em>), became a functioning city. But it first needed to be explored, investigated, conceived and developed. No easy task during the pandemic as he was forced to work remotely. Both for Anderson<\/em>\u00a0and Stockhausen<\/em>, a great inspiration for the look of the landscape (and that of the city) was\u00a0“Bad Day at Black Rock”<\/em>, the 1955 movie directed by\u00a0John Sturges<\/em>\u00a0starring\u00a0Spencer Tracy<\/em>. This was filmed in locations around Death Valley and the Mojave Desert.<\/p>\n

Other design inspirations were “Ace in the Hole”<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0Billy Wilder<\/em>\u2019s “Kiss Me, Stupid”<\/em>, and also the classic “It Happened One Night”<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Frank Capra<\/em>\u00a0as a reference for the road, even for the shadows projected through the top trellis during the picnic scene in Asteroid City<\/em>.<\/p>\n
