On the one hand, American artist <em>Simone Leigh<\/em>\u00a0was named Best Artist at the Biennale and, on the other hand, the UK pavilion, with work by\u00a0<em>Sonia Boyce<\/em>, was chosen as the Best National Representation. It is the first time that two black women, <em>Leigh <\/em>and <em>Boyce,<\/em> have received what are possibly the most prestigious awards of the contemporary art world. Inside, there were pop sculptures shaped like mouths, eyes and other parts of the body, as well as videos simulating a recovering body\u2026 \u00a0A heart hanging from the ceiling would grow until it took up the whole space, forcing the visitor to step back making it a metaphor of the world today. The artist performed during the opening hours of the Biennale for a total of 200 days, and the truth is we don\u2019t know how it ended. The idea was very powerful and showed hundreds of random images on a giant video screen while the artist, in a corner with his back to the audience, played a single note in a distorted manner. \u00a0A simultaneously hypnotic and deafening experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-60120 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine90.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1435\" height=\"2151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine90.png 1435w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine90-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine90-284x425.png 284w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine90-768x1151.png 768w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine90-1025x1536.png 1025w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine90-1366x2048.png 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1435px) 100vw, 1435px\" \/><br \/>\n<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><u>Greece: Loukia Alavanou, &#8220;Oedipus in Search of Colonus&#8221;<\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, the proposal consisted of immersing us in a Virtual Reality film that took us to a deprived Greece, where <em>Oedipus<\/em> is a modern hero, an exiled person who, like the classical character, looks for a place where he can be buried, as is the case today with the <em>Roma <\/em>that live in shanty towns on the outskirts of Athens. It staged the industrial landscape of the Italian productive dream through the recreation of abandoned manufacturing spaces. This installation wanted to make us reflect on the defeat of the industrial society. At the end of the installation, there was another: <em>&#8220;Destiny of the Comets &#8220;<\/em>, where we see fireflies flying over a calm sea at night. With this element, they were alluding to <em>Pasolini\u2019s <\/em>famous article <em>\u201cThe Power Void in Italy\u201d<\/em>, that was a warning against the surviving fascism and that now stretches over a horizon of environmental catastrophes, albeit in the hope of the return of the fireflies that can lead us out of this fearsome night\u2026 Excellent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-60124 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine70.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1434\" height=\"2153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine70.png 1434w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine70-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine70-283x425.png 283w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine70-768x1153.png 768w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine70-1023x1536.png 1023w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine70-1364x2048.png 1364w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1434px) 100vw, 1434px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><u>Espa\u00f1a: Ignasi Aball\u00ed, &#8220;Correcci\u00f3n&#8221;<\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Aball\u00ed\u2019<\/em>s proposal was made up of two actions: an architectural intervention on a scale of 1:1 of the pavilion and the edition of 6 guides. Both actions were conceived with the idea of correcting the apparent errors that he found during his research on the physical features of the pavilion and the city of Venice. With the first, <em>Aball\u00ed<\/em> corrected the layout of the Spanish building by turning the structure ten degrees which allowed him, in this way, to align it with the pavilions close to the <em>Giardini<\/em>. And with the second action, he corrected the generally accepted idea of what a tourist guide of the Italian city is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-60118 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine64.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1431\" height=\"2154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine64.png 1431w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine64-199x300.png 199w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine64-282x425.png 282w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine64-768x1156.png 768w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine64-1020x1536.png 1020w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine64-1361x2048.png 1361w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1431px) 100vw, 1431px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><u>Chile:\u00a0Turba Tol Hol-Hol Tol, several artists and researchers<\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pavilion recreated a journey, in which the visitors were led along a circular platform surrounded by a translucid screen, where images of a descent to the underbelly of a peat bog were projected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything around it was live wet moss, and while we went through it a soundtrack of tribal chants, guttural sounds and high-pitched screams made the ground shake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-60134 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine89-e1675437172324.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1436\" height=\"2156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine89-e1675437172324.png 1436w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine89-e1675437172324-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine89-e1675437172324-283x425.png 283w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine89-e1675437172324-768x1153.png 768w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine89-e1675437172324-1023x1536.png 1023w, https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Venecia_Bienale59_CCmagazine89-e1675437172324-1364x2048.png 1364w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1436px) 100vw, 1436px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The message of this installation consisted of understanding the importance of preserving peatland to successfully mitigate the increasing CO2 emissions caused by human activity, as they absorb more carbon than the forests, an ability that makes these wetlands one of the most valuable ecosystems on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>As well as Chile\u2019s installation, this year one of its most distinguished artists, <em>Cecilia Vicu\u00f1a<\/em>, was awarded the Golden Lion. In fact, they even seemed to breathe\u2026 In the centre of the installation was the main sculpture,\u00a0<em>Chroma V<\/em>\u00a0(2022), a skeleton made of aluminum, polymer and LED with the silhouette of a snake 50 m long.
