That\u2019s why, although we didn\u2019t cover all of it, we do want to share with you some of the places we visited on this road trip in a blue Seat Ateca\u00a0Reference XM<\/a>. Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n

Villages and favourite places<\/strong><\/p>\n

Calella de Palafrugell<\/h6>\n

Thanks to its privileged location, this is one of the most beautiful towns on the emblematic Costa Brava. This is because this ancient fishing village is on a rocky coast, surrounded by small coves with crystal clear waters, and its charm lies in its idyllic skyline of low whitewashed houses, its colourful boats on the sand and its welcoming atmosphere.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As well as for enjoying a day in summer, Calella\u00a0is actually an ideal destination both for hiking routes and its gastronomy as you can enjoy exquisite rice, fish or seafood dishes in places like La Blava<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Sol i Mar<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Without going into too much detail, we recommend that you take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Playa del Canadell\u00a0that preserves the fishermen\u2019s colourful old porches, as well as the Playa de Port Bo, known as the “playa de las barcas (the beach of the boats)”<\/em>. This is where the popular singing of habaneras <\/em>takes place at the beginning of July.<\/p>\n

We also recommend that you wander around the old part of town and some of its narrow streets, such as Voltes\u00a0and\u00a0Gravina. And that you eat a Crema Catalana flavoured homemade ice cream at Enxaneta<\/em>. It\u2019s exquisite!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The scenic viewpoint Mirador de Manel Juanola i Reixach<\/em>\u00a0(named after the creator of the formula for the famous\u00a0Pastillas Juanola <\/em>throat lozenges) is really beautiful and from there you can enjoy the lovely views over the\u00a0Playa del Canadell\u00a0and Port Bo beaches. At your feet, lies “Casa Rosa”<\/em>. Another interesting scenic viewpoint is the one at\u00a0La Punta dels Burricaires, located between the beach at Port Pelegr\u00ed\u00a0and the cove at\u00a0La Platgeta.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Caminos de Ronda\u00a0footpaths are another attraction on the Costa Brava. There are a few and they are ideal for discovering incredible coves and for enjoying fantastic landscapes. One of them is the footpath that goes from Playa del Canadell\u00a0to the coastal town of Llafranc. You can cover this 1.5 km walk in 20 minutes, more or less.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Although we didn\u2019t visit them on this occasion, we would like to recommend the beautiful gardens, Jardines de Cap Roig.\u00a0They are located on one of the most iconic capes on the Catalonian coastline, and they stand out because of the red hues of the rocks and because of the almost 1,000 species from all over the world that live there. As well as the fantastic gardens and scenic viewpoints, you can also see the castle Castillo de Cap Roig, where each summer one of the most prestigious music festivals in the world is held, where great national and international stars such as Elton <\/em>John or Lady Gaga <\/em>have played, among many others.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

La Bisbal<\/h6>\n

And as it\u2019s not all about sun, beaches, and beach bars, it\u2019s interesting to visit other towns such as La Bisbal, famous for its ceramics and its vintage shops. We visited the following:\u00a0Culdesac<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Cer\u00e1mica Sampere<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0\u00daltima Parada<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Begur<\/h6>\n

Begur\u00a0is not only one of the most beautiful villages on the Costa Brava but also a place where we could easily settle down to live. It has many charms: on the one hand, its medieval aesthetic, on the other, its colonial history – there are houses here that were built by the indianos<\/em>, those who returned after having found their wealth in America- and yet another highlight, we should also recall that this town experienced Hollywood\u2019s golden era. In fact, Ava Gardner<\/em>\u00a0was here.<\/p>\n

This magical town also has coves and beaches that you will fall in love with. Some examples are Aiguablava,\u00a0Fornells,\u00a0Sa Tuna\u00a0or\u00a0Illa Roja, which is a nudist cove of 180 metres, whose name refers to the great reddish rock that presides over it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe magical town of Begur also has coves and beaches that you will fall in love with.\u201d<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

There is wonderful food to be had both in the town and on the coast. These are some of the restaurants we liked the most: Toc al Mar<\/em>,\u00a0Turandot<\/em>,\u00a0Casa Juanita<\/em>,\u00a0Hostal Sa Rascassa<\/em>,\u00a0Clara<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Can Kai<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Of course, you can’t forget to visit its castle.<\/p>\n

As well as stroll through the town, have a drink at the C\u00a0roack<\/em>, where they prepare delicious cocktails and show classic films, and walk along one of its Caminos de Ronda.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Pals and Peratallada<\/h6>\n

Pals\u00a0and\u00a0Peratallada\u00a0are the most famous medieval municipalities on the Costa Brava. They are located just a few kilometres from Begur and they are both picture-postcard villages.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In Pals, we would highlight the Torre de les Hores, which is a Romanesque tower built between the 11th and 12th century, its cobblestone streets and the houses with heavy wooden doorways full of plants and flowers. It also has a scenic viewpoint called Mirador de Josep Pla<\/em>, named after one of its illustrious authors, from which you can look out to the Illes Medes (Medes Islands).<\/p>\n

Pals\u00a0is famous for its rice dishes, but we would go for the artisan pizzas at Grava<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 they\u2019re delicious! \u2013 and its charming open-air setting.<\/p>\n

Peratalladais a medieval village declared Conjunto Hist\u00f3rico (a national heritage designation), which is documented as far back as the 10th century. Along its feudal cobblestone alleys, you arrive at the castle with its tower Torre del Homenaje\u00a0and\u00a0Palacio, and the perfectly preserved wall and even a moat dug out of the rock. It is an ideal spot for a walk, some shopping of traditional food products and artisan craftwork and for eating at any of its lovely and delicious restaurants such as\u00a0L’Eixida.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Palau Casavells: a dialogue between contemporary art, antiques and design<\/h6>\n

This historical 14th century building of almost 3,000m2, that was completely refurbished, is the head office of\u00a0Galer\u00eda Miquel Alzueta<\/a><\/u><\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0Side Gallery<\/a><\/u><\/em>\u00a0in the Empord\u00e0 region. It is the ideal setting to exhibit different exponents of contemporary art such as\u00a0Andrea\u00a0Torres<\/em>,\u00a0Marria Pratts<\/em>,\u00a0Laurent Martin Lo<\/em>,\u00a0Guim Ti\u00f3<\/em>,\u00a0Max Cobalto<\/em>,\u00a0Sune Christiansen<\/em>,\u00a0Lidia Masllorens<\/em>,\u00a0Bruno Oll\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/em>Xevi<\/em>\u00a0Sol\u00e0<\/em>. And also, designer pieces by Branco&Preto<\/em>,\u00a0Luis Barrag\u00e1n<\/em>,\u00a0Zhou Yilun<\/em>,\u00a0Guillermo Santom\u00e0<\/em>,\u00a0Youngmin Kang<\/em>,\u00a0Willem Van Hooff<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Lukas Saint-Joigny<\/em>, among others.<\/p>\n

The truth is this place is beautiful. It is inspiring to drive up to it and then roam through its different spaces decorated with works of art and designer pieces. That\u2019s why, if you like art and contemporary design, a visit to Palau Casavells\u00a0is essential.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Cap de Creus Natural Park<\/h6>\n

To the north of the gulf of Rosas<\/em>\u00a0and very close to Cadaqu\u00e9s\u00a0is this amazing natural park, the first maritime-terrestrial park in Catalonia created in 1998 which also has a lighthouse, the second oldest lighthouse in this autonomous region.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Cap de Creus\u00a0peninsula makes up the last buttress of the Pyrenees and the eastern most part of the Iberian Peninsula. The coast is abrupt and ragged with stunning cliffs and hidden coves.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

You can only access the park on the buses available at the park entrance \u2013 they leave every 20 minutes, stopping at the 3 stops there are on the way -. We stopped at two of them. The second and third, where the lighthouse is, the two restaurants with unbeatable views, at any time of day, and Cala Fredosa, which is like something out of a film.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Cap de Creus\u00a0has been and is the key point of inspiration for artists, writers and film directors. It was undeniably so for Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/em>, but also for many others.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Salvador Dal\u00ed House Museum (Portlligat)<\/h6>\n

In a small bay at Cap de Creus,\u00a0a few kilometres from Cadaqu\u00e9s, is Portlligat. The magic and beauty of this fishing village captivated Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/em>\u00a0in 1930, when he decided to set up one of his homes there.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A tiny fisherman\u2019s hut from which the genius began to develop his art. He lived here until Gala<\/em>\u2019s death in 1982. He later moved to\u00a0Castillo de P\u00fabol. This house, or rather this sum of houses that he bought and merged until he achieved what would be his home for so many years, was converted into the\u00a0House Museum<\/a>\u00a0and a visit that is a must<\/em>\u00a0where, of course, there is no shortage of eccentricities: taxidermist pieces, the iconic eggs, swan fountains, the lip-shaped sofa, the Pirelli signs<\/em>, the lovers\u2019 silver heads, etc\u2026<\/p>\n

As well as visiting his house, you will discover that the light at Portlligat\u00a0is unique. We don\u2019t know what phenomenon caused this incomparable beauty, but what we do know is that the master discovered it, fell in love with it and could not live without it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Cadaqu\u00e9s<\/h6>\n

Cadaqu\u00e9s\u00a0is one of the most symbolic spots of the landscape and the maritime tradition of the\u00a0Costa Brava. Y<\/em>ou have only to discover this white village and its bay to inevitably fall in love with it. Oh\u00a0Cadaqu\u00e9s!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In the second half of the 20th century, Cadaqu\u00e9s\u00a0was filled with artists and bohemians such as the surrealist Salvador Dal\u00ed\u00a0<\/em>and his wife, Gala<\/em>, who lived specifically in\u00a0Portlligat, and also, the painter\u00a0Joan Pon\u00e7<\/em>\u00a0or the writer\u00a0Josep Pla<\/em>, among others.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

What cannot be missed when you visit Cadaqu\u00e9s?<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Enjoying the views from the Iglesia de Santa Maria<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

2. Savouring a good fish “suquet”<\/em>, a rice dish or any other dish you fancy.<\/p>\n

In Cadaqu\u00e9s, the food is incredible, and these are our favourite restaurants:<\/p>\n

Talla <\/em>(the marinaded sardines and the entire menu deserve a tribute, as do the views),\u00a0Narita <\/em>(their ceviches and in fact, everything they prepare because it is delicious),\u00a0Compartir<\/em>\u00a0(their surprise tasting menu is a winner but their rice is just as good. You cannot skip the cheesecake),\u00a0Es Baluard<\/em>\u00a0(a classic with high quality produce and very tasty dishes),\u00a0Xiringuito La Sal<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Set Cadaqu\u00e9s<\/em>\u00a0(it\u2019s new and mainly offers breakfasts, drinks and evening meals based on finger food and snacks).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

3. Wandering around the streets of the old part of town.<\/p>\n

4. Swimming in some of its coves and beaches like Es Pianc,\u00a0Caleta, la\u00a0Platja del Rosor\u00a0Es Llaner Gran.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Walking along the whole length of the bay.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

6. Having a drink at\u00a0Bar Mar\u00edtim<\/em>, Boia<\/em>, Brown Sugar <\/em>or at\u00a0Bar l’Amistat<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hotels<\/strong><\/p>\n

We stayed at two beautiful boutique hotels. At\u00a0Begur\u00a0we stayed at\u00a0La Bionda<\/a><\/em>, that could be the perfect setting for a Wes Anderson\u00a0<\/em>film, and in Cadaqu\u00e9s\u00a0at\u00a0Casa Nereta<\/a><\/u><\/em>, which is the house of the Joan Pon\u00e7<\/em>, the painter, converted into designer accommodation with lots of charm. We highly recommend them both.<\/p>\n

Both hotels have very few rooms, their location is excellent, the service offered by both the owners as well as the rest of the staff is sublime, and the decor, although in different styles, is unique and has a lot of personality. Analog Costa Brava<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also, on this trip we brought along an analog camera from\u00a0CamerashopBCN<\/a><\/em>, an online shop created by Santiago Clavijo<\/em>, that has already become the largest analog camera shop in Spain, and where you can find true treasures.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Ours is a compact camera<\/a>\u00a0point and shoot<\/em>\u00a0Canon PRIMA Super 105<\/em>, and the film we used was\u00a0Kodak Portra 400<\/em>.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll say no more, nothing better than to enjoy these recommendations firsthand. We hope you like them!<\/p>\n
