{"id":35393,"date":"2020-03-15T09:40:54","date_gmt":"2020-03-15T09:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/la-maravillosa-casa-laberinto-de-xavier-corbero\/"},"modified":"2024-03-27T17:48:39","modified_gmt":"2024-03-27T17:48:39","slug":"xavier-corberos-wonderful-labyrinth-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ccmagazine.es\/en\/xavier-corberos-wonderful-labyrinth-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Xavier Corber\u00f3&#8217;s wonderful labyrinth house"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>International artist\u00a0<strong>Xavier Corber\u00f3\u00b4s house\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 considered by many as being the most important Catalan artist since\u00a0<em>Gaud\u00ed<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 is an architectural gem located in Esplugues, which is a municipality within the metropolitan area of Barcelona, which was also home to the\u00a0<em>Pujol i Bausis factory<\/em>, which has produced architects like\u00a0<em>Gaud\u00ed and<\/em>\u00a0<em>Dom<\/em><em>\u00e8<\/em><em>nech i Muntaner<\/em>, and which was the setting of many 60\u00b4s westerns.<\/p>\n<p>Among the thousands of wonders he carried out \u2013 including the design of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games medals \u2013 his masterpiece of a house stands out.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"Cos\">\u201cThe house is like a magnificent sculpture. It feels much the same as being inside a work of art.\u201d<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"Cos\">Currently, it is his widow\u00a0<em>Maria Dolors Rica<\/em>, who lives inside this dream house made up of five winding floors structured around a hexagonal interior courtyard and who fights in order that her husband\u00b4s legacy &#8211; including over 400 pieces of the artist, not be forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>We could say that the house is in some way hidden from the town\u00b4s passers-by because it is in a small neighbourhood of old farm houses in the vicinity of the Santa Magdalena Parish. And, in fact, beyond the threshold it\u00b4s impossible to imagine the amazing feats it hides\u2026like the classic\u00a0<em>Rolls-Royce<\/em>\u00a0which is there for merely decorative purposes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Cos\">As I was saying, everything in this house is an absolute work of art. The whole house is divided into 6 descending floors which together take up 15,000 square metres (comprising 25 individual spaces) and where each room is built around a glass skylight. On the last floor we may find an impressive orchard with spectacular views.<\/p>\n<p><em>Corber\u00f3\u00b4s Home<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 who\u2019s preferred description was\u00a0<em>\u201chumbled in comparison to stone\u201d<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0is a self-portrait and exploration which took up 40 years of his life. It is true to say that the process and evolution have been enormous. A labyrinth of studios, living rooms, the artist\u00b4s residence, galleries and an underground workshop, which grew forth from nine industrial structures which lie there but are in deterioration. It is a harmonious lattice where stunning staircases cohabit with other monumental pieces by\u00a0<em>Corber\u00f3<\/em>, like designer furniture and in which the coldness of the cement contrasts with the warmth of the wood forming a perfect partnership.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"Cos\">\u201cCorber\u00f3 was a close friend of Salvador Dal\u00ed and Duchamp, whose surrealist influence\u00a0is clearly reflected in his works.\u201d<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The exterior of the house includes a great structure of 3 floor cement arches and which stand out as an enormous grey skeletal structure. There is a garden around them full of stone or iron totem poles sculpted by the artist whose constant wish it was to create poetry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Cos\"><em>Corber\u00f3<\/em>\u00a0tasted the sweet nectar of success \u2013 he travelled through the\u00a0<em>Fundici\u00f3n Medici\u00a0<\/em>and by the\u00a0<em>Bienal Hispanoamericana<\/em>, he exhibited in Munich, in Japan, in Nueva York \u2013at\u00a0<em>MoMa<\/em>!-, in Amsterdam\u00b4s\u00a0<em>Stedelijk Museum<\/em>\u00a0and at London\u00b4s\u00a0<em>Victoria and Albert Museum<\/em>&#8230; -, as well as gaining great prestige in the USA. However, his decision was to set up his house and workshop in\u00a0Esplugues de Llobregat, in order to be close to his friends and family. Unfortunately, he passed away last year, but his art, talent and great performance will remain eternal.
