On this occasion,\u00a0Baker\u00a0<\/em>has directed this moving story written by\u00a0Chris Bergorch<\/em>, in which\u00a0Halley<\/em>,\u00a0a teenage mum, who is single, wild, disenchanted and problematic who lives with\u00a0Moonee<\/em>, her 6 year old daughter in a pink motel of very\u00a0Wesandersonian aesthetics\u00a0<\/em>and located only a few metres from\u00a0Disney World<\/em>, and which is managed by\u00a0Bobby\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 magnificently played by\u00a0Willem Dafoe<\/em>– a rough looking but compassionate man who becomes a kind of father for the two main characters. What is most intriguing about what happens in these 115 minutes, is that despite all the problems that befall them, little\u00a0Moonee<\/em>\u00a0teaches us great life lessons, managing to be happy every day with the little things and her loved and inseparable companions.<\/p>\n

As you will be able to see for yourselves when you see it,\u00a0The Florida Project<\/em>\u00a0is an ironic portrayal of the B side of the American dream,\u00a0in which many Americans live below the poverty line in road-side motels earning a living illegally while only a few metres away\u2026in a fantasy world of fun,\u00a0the vacational empire of the USA exists, reminding them of their misfortune.<\/p>\n

Among the many anecdotes of this film, these are the ones that most drew our attention:<\/p>\n

1. None of the actors in the film are professionals except\u00a0Willem Dafoe<\/em>! -.Valeria Cotto<\/em>, best friend of the main child star, was discovered in a supermarket, and\u00a0Bria Vinaite<\/em>, who plays the role of\u00a0Moonee\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>mum, was discovered on\u00a0Instagram<\/em>. What\u2019s most interesting is that this is the normal working method of director\u00a0Sean Baker\u00a0<\/em>and screen writer\u00a0Chris Bergogh<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe asked the locals if they wanted to take part in the film.\u201d<\/h2>\n

2. The name of the film is a reference to one of the first names that were used in the development of\u00a0Disney World<\/em>. It was originally called The Florida Project although it was changed to\u00a0Walt Disney World<\/em>\u00a0in 1971 for its inauguration due to the success of\u00a0Disneyland<\/em>\u00a0in California when\u00a0Walt Disney\u00a0<\/em>decided to erect a gigantic theme park in Florida.<\/p>\n

3. The whole movie\u00a0has been filmed in 35mm, except the final sequence.<\/p>\n

4. Willem Dafoe\u00a0<\/em>invested\u00a0<\/em>a week of his time before production, living in the filming area immersed in the life of the characters and the nuances of the regional dialect.<\/p>\n

5. Willem Dafoe<\/em>\u00a0has been nominated for an\u00a0Oscar<\/em>\u00a0for Best actor following his performance in this film as well as a\u00a0Golden Globe<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As we said at the beginning, the best thing about this film is that although it seems that there is no hope for the future and events get more and more complicated, it\u2019s the kids, especially\u00a0Moonee<\/em>, who live in this time bomb from a different perspective, perceiving their own reality in which friendship and the desire to discover the world, are the highlights of the film and the essence of their\u00a0happiness. It\u2019s incredible how they live in two parallel realities where the adults are hopelessly freefalling but the children manage to withdraw from an environment full of poverty, malnutrition, drugs and prostitution, thanks to their innocence and to their ability to build a universe full of life and hope without any apparent drama.<\/p>\n

There are beautiful scenes, sublime dialogues, images worthy of framing, heart-breaking moments and all in an intelligent and sensitive portrayal of these and so many other situations of inequality, which many families in Florida and other areas of America are unfortunately living in and that thanks to\u00a0Baker<\/em>\u00a0we have gotten to know and been exposed to.<\/p>\n

Enough said except that we strongly urge you to go and see it. It\u2019s whole-hearted however you look at it.<\/p>\n
