Designed by PS Studio, the practice of Pierre Savajol, the renovation occupies 65 m² in the 10th arrondissement and enjoys an unobstructed view of the sky. Its interest, however, lies as much in that connection with the outdoors as in the way the interior is resolved: two former dwellings become a single home, organised around the elements that remain.

Dated April 2025, the renovation has a stated budget of €110,000 excluding tax. Much of the design effort focuses on the layout and on furniture conceived for specific purposes, from shelving that incorporates the presence of old chimney flues to a bench deep enough to lie on. The sense of spaciousness emerges through decisions that shape everyday use as well as the appearance of the rooms.

A load-bearing wall that organises the home

The starting point is an internal load-bearing wall containing old chimney flues. This structure organises the new floor plan and establishes a division between the private and service areas and the large shared living space. On one side are the bathroom, separate WC, entrance cupboards and dressing room; on the other is the main living area, covering almost 40 m².

Devoting such a substantial proportion of a 65 m² home to communal space expresses a clear priority: allowing cooking, working and relaxing to take place within the same room. That decision calls for careful consideration of where everything is stored and how activities relate to one another, because the spaciousness of an open-plan room also depends on what happens around its edges.

The wall provides a fixed reference point for this arrangement. In a renovation that joins two dwellings, its presence helps bring coherence to the whole and makes the new layout legible without erasing every trace of the previous one. The existing architecture thus plays a part in how the apartment is inhabited.

Almost 40 m² of shared daylight

The east–west orientation of the main living area allows daylight to enter from both ends, changing throughout the day. The sitting room, kitchen and workspace all benefit from this arrangement, bringing domestic activities together within one light-filled space. Unobstructed views towards the sky complement the continuity of the interior and explain the project’s name.

This layout raises a pertinent question for any renovation of a compact home: which activities genuinely need a room of their own, and which can coexist? Here, the workspace forms part of the communal area, while the bedroom remains separate. The result reflects a particular way of living, with more floor space devoted to shared activities.

Bespoke joinery plays a decisive role in making that choice viable. When several functions occupy the same room, furniture needs to address both its immediate purpose and its relationship with the rest of the home. In Floating Apartment, providing storage and freeing up space are part of the same design process.

A new role for the old chimneys

Along another wall in the living room, the old chimney flues are incorporated into a shelving unit more than four metres long. The project uses this wall to organise the room, making an existing architectural feature part of its domestic furnishings.

Alongside this intervention is a suspended bench in light ash with a clear varnish finish, extending into a deep banquette. Its dimensions accommodate different uses: sitting and talking, reading, taking a nap or settling in for an impromptu screening. The piece offers a way to relax that is less dependent on arranging several separate seats, making use of the continuity of the joinery.

The structure incorporates generous concealed storage within its available recesses. That capacity is particularly important in a home where much of daily life unfolds in a single room: books, objects and belongings need somewhere to go so that the open floor area remains usable.

What makes this solution interesting is the correspondence between form and function. The length of the shelving brings order to the living room, the depth of the banquette allows people to recline, and the enclosed compartments accommodate whatever does not need to remain on display. Each decision has consequences for the way the room is occupied.

Blue defines the private spaces

A palette of deep, matt blues runs through the apartment, with a particularly strong presence in the entrance, bedroom and bathroom. The entrance hall is conceived as a graphic transitional space leading to the two private rooms. Colour establishes a connection between them and gives a circulation area an identity of its own.

This approach treats the entrance hall as part of the experience of the home, with its own atmosphere even though its primary role is to provide access. Blue extends that continuity into the bedroom, where a painted headboard is accompanied by two Charlotte Perriand wall lights. The composition brings together a simple device, paint, and lighting that introduces a specific reference to design history.

The project therefore reserves some of its chromatic intensity for the more secluded areas. Alongside the openness of the communal room, these spaces offer a more intimate scale, associated with rest and personal routines.

A bathroom that lets daylight through

The relationship between bathroom and bedroom is also shaped by natural light, which enters through the bathroom window and extends into the bedroom. Daylight helps connect the two rooms and allows an external opening to benefit a greater part of the interior.

The large shower combines Winckelmans tiles and glass tiles with stainless-steel details, a material also used for the washbasin. This combination introduces different responses to light and touch within a limited area, while maintaining a recognisable material palette.

The bathroom demonstrates how much a service space can contribute to the quality of the home as a whole. Its window benefits an adjoining room, and its finishes reflect the attention to detail found throughout the renovation.

A kitchen integrated into everyday life

In the kitchen, the central island combines light ash and ceramic, continuing the use of wood and its relationship with mineral surfaces. The material creates a connection with the living room joinery and helps integrate the kitchen fittings into the shared space.

Above the sink, a bespoke cupboard conceals a coffee machine within a retractable arrangement. It is a small but significant detail in an open-plan room, allowing a choice over when an appliance becomes part of the visible interior and when it is tucked away.

Floating Apartment offers a considered example of what a complete renovation of a 65 m² home can achieve.
